Exploring Life & Business with Paul Karlitz of Sagient

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Karlitz.

Hi Paul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in this business nearly 30 years ago in New York City after graduating from Syracuse University. My first stop was in my family’s manufacturing business, which taught me the importance of discipline, work ethic, and how real companies run. However, after two years, I knew it wasn’t my calling. Making the decision to leave that security and step into a commission-based career with no guarantees was one of the scariest and most exciting choices I’ve ever made. I wanted to see what I could build based solely on my own merits.
In the early years, my work centered on helping families and business owners protect what they had built through insurance, which naturally evolved into estate and business planning. I grew my practice the old-fashioned way: relationships, seminars, and yes, even cold calling. It was exhilarating and humbling in equal measure. I was fortunate to experience early success, which gave me the confidence and momentum to push through the inevitable lean periods that come with this profession.
A few years in, I was asked to move into management, and that changed everything for me. I discovered that I got far more fulfillment from helping others succeed than I ever did from my own personal achievements. Watching someone I recruited and mentored walk across a stage to receive an award, buy their first home, get married, or start a family has always meant more to me than any accolade I’ve received. I certainly never imagined that passion would eventually lead me across the country or ultimately to take over a 100-year-old firm.
Even as my career progressed, I always felt that something was missing. Insurance is critical, and it is the foundation of any sound financial plan, but it can’t stand alone. About 12 years into my career, I joined Lenox Advisors, a full-service wealth management firm. That experience was pivotal. It showed me what truly holistic financial planning could look like and became the blueprint for what we are building today at Sagient.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road, and I wouldn’t be honest if I said otherwise. That said, I’ve always taken pride in facing challenges head on rather than avoiding them.
Over the years, I’ve had to learn how to stay composed when things don’t go as planned for a client or colleague, and how to lead through uncertainty, whether it was the dot-com bubble, multiple recessions, the 2008 financial crisis, the pandemic, or sudden market corrections. Those experiences leave a lasting imprint and shape you. Even today, I still strive to meet my own expectations of how I should respond in difficult moments, and that’s probably a good thing.
The most difficult chapter of my career was being in New York City on September 11, 2001. Professionally, I was working with many clients who were directly impacted, helping them navigate fear, loss, and uncertainty. While we were able to provide financial stability and clarity through planning, there was nothing that could make those conversations good. That experience profoundly reinforced the importance of our work, even when it is emotionally heavy.
In my current role, the hardest challenge is seeing one of our advisors struggle. I’ve been there, so I deeply understand how isolating and difficult that can feel. At the same time, I know how powerful it is to come out on the other side, to build a meaningful career, create financial freedom for clients, and enjoy a lifestyle that most people only dream about. That transformation is what keeps me motivated every day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sagient?
Sagient is a wealth management firm whose name comes from the Latin word for “those who know or perceive quickly.” While I took over and rebranded the firm as Sagient in 2023, our heritage actually dates back to 1905, giving us more than a century of helping families and businesses navigate their financial lives.
Our mission is to deliver holistic financial planning that creates long-term prosperity and peace of mind for our clients. We believe true financial success isn’t just about returns, it is about clarity, confidence, and alignment with what matters most to each family.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to Behavioral Finance. Traditional financial planning is often heavily mathematical, focused on goals, timelines, and risk tolerance. While that is important, we have taken it a step further with our proprietary financial planning platform, the Sagient Blueprint. The Blueprint integrates behavioral finance into every plan, helping clients understand their values, motivations, and decision-making tendencies.
By grounding financial strategies in a family’s core values, we help clients stay disciplined and confident, especially during volatile markets. When your decisions are rooted in what truly matters to you, it becomes much easier to tune out trends, headlines, and emotional reactions.
From a brand perspective, I am most proud that Sagient represents wisdom, integrity, and long-term thinking, not transactions. We are not simply managing money, we are guiding families through some of the most important financial decisions of their lives.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If there is one thing I would want readers to know, it is that financial planning is about far more than numbers on a page. It is about relationships, trust, and helping people build lives that align with their values and aspirations. At Sagient, we take that responsibility seriously and consider it a privilege.
