Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Wesson.
Hi Nichole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a GRITS – a girl raised in the South.
I was born and raised in Texas, and I often remind people that Texas is very much a part of the South. I’ve had some great opportunities presented to me, which is how I ended up on the West Coast. Relocating to the Bay Area with my all-time favorite employer made a massive impact on my life. I didn’t think much about how life in California differed from Texas, but the move was exactly what I needed at that time, and it created a host of new opportunities for me.
Living in Vancouver, British Columbia, was the same. Just as I did when moving to the Bay Area, I gained access to new experiences, people, and insights. Vancouver was my home for many years before I moved back to the United States and settled in Southern California. And since I’ve been back, my confidence has increased. Getting older doesn’t hurt, making it easier to try things I’ve had on my mind for years. Besides starting my business, I went back to school and earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Organizational Leadership. After all, how could I coach others to go for their dreams and heart’s desires if I didn’t do the same?
My many moves have allowed me to meet people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and given me the chance to champion what makes us all unique. Combining that knowledge with my professional experience has helped set me on my current path. Through development coaching, I have the opportunity to help individuals reach their desired goals. The same applies to my consultant practice. I’m leveraging the knowledge, experience, and expertise I’ve gained through my work and life experiences to help organizations enhance engagement with candidates and employees, ultimately making a positive impact for their customers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I never expected it to be, but it has been rewarding. Most businesses deal with some risk. That’s an aspect of being an entrepreneur. The biggest hurdle I’ve faced is the one I’ve created — doubting myself. Thankfully, I have a fantastic community to remind me who I am when those doubts try to drown out what I know to be true. Whenever a doubt arose, I would receive an accolade, a thank you, or some sign reminding me of the ways I had made an impact in the past.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nichole Wesson Coaching & Consulting?
It took me years, working in different roles, before I recognized, found, and admitted what I was good at doing. I enjoy helping people, but for me, that help comes from tapping into my superpowers: problem-solving, critical thinking, and brainstorming new ideas and strategies. I enjoy doing something new, but it’s not without having a goal or a result in mind.
Human resources and leadership are my areas of expertise and sweet spots. I was introduced to human resources early in my career, and except for a few ventures into corporate marketing, most of my career has been in a human resources role or supporting human resources clients through sales and marketing. The reason leadership is a sweet spot is that I have often required more of my managers and leaders in the organizations I’ve worked for. Was I a problem employee? No and yes. I excelled in my work responsibilities, but I haven’t been one to follow the status quo and do things the way they’ve always been done. I like challenging the status quo because I know there are multiple ways to reach a destination. And along the way, there’s an adventure in the journey.
I get to lean on my superpowers every day as a development coach, HR consultant, and strategist. Helping others see their strengths and lean into them is satisfying. It makes a significant difference in their job search and in their decisions on how to move forward in both their personal and professional lives. My superpowers make a lasting impact when working with organizations. It doesn’t matter whether the scope of work is for internal/employee communications, enhancing the candidate or employer experience, or supporting company employees in their learning and development. I know it’s time for change within these companies, and I’m here to create strategies and solutions that make a meaningful impact and difference.
In addition to coaching individuals and consulting with companies, I’ve created two signature courses: Brainstorm Your Vision and DoByWhy for Writing Your Goals. In 2019, I wrote and published DoByWhy: Journal + Guidebook to Create, Attain, and Achieve Your Goals. I currently host and produce the “Tip That Scale” podcast, sharing tips, tools, strategies, and tactics that help individuals tip that scale in their favor.
What frames my business and all I do as a servant and transformational leader is to be for others what I once needed in my personal and professional life. It’s why my mission and the mission of my company is to help organizations and individuals limit less to be limitless.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is not to let others define who I am and what I am capable of doing. Most of the time, they do it because of their fear and unwillingness to try something different for themselves.
