Exploring Life & Business with Nancy Scott of Z Fabrique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Scott.

Hi Nancy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have had my retail store in Long Beach, CA for over 30 years, but I began my business out of my parent’s garage years before. I thought that Covid would be the reason I stopped “doing my thing.” I love what I do and the old adage of, if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life, pertains to me. I feel blessed. Living in Southern California with the incredible diversity is beautiful. I am able to see and feel the wonderful energy of So. Cal. every time I am in my store. People trying to help themselves, family members & friends. Customers becoming friends. Friends becoming family. I watch perfect strangers come together in my store, connect and become friends. The energy and light of that brighten the world. Six-degrees-of-separation no longer exists. We are all connected.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a rough, rocky road, but some of the best journies I have been on were filled with sharp turns, broken-down vehicles and incredibly interesting people that I never would have met if the path had been smooth. I believe to be a great business owner you have to keep reinventing your business. Times change, people change, needs change and there is a dynamic beauty in that change. I try to embrace that change. As I learn I transform. Of course, The Covid pandemic is a really good example of a challenge all businesses had to face, but for me one of the greatest challenges I have faced and still face is tech! I have been in business so long that I have watched computer use and cell phones come into existence. Social Media is something I struggle with and I have a hard time adjusting to that aspect of my business. Just when I think I have something figured out a new platform arrives and once again, I am navigating the Social Media Roller Coaster Ride.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Z Fabrique is a brick and mortar store that specializes in New Age supplies. I love stones and crystals. We have a huge selection of incense and always are adding new customer requests. We carry white sage smudge sticks, palo santo, candles, jewelry, etc. But more than anything, I love helping people feel better. I want to help you see the world around you. I want you to feel healthy and well, so you are aware and can help others that might need a hand up. Don’t sit in judgment of others-just help people the best when and where you can. Lose the sarcasm and genuinely ask if someone is O.K. or how they are, take a moment to listen to the answer and respond with an answer that leaves them feeling better!

What were you like growing up?
I decided I wanted to go into forestry when I was 12. My Mom tried to nudge me out of my career choice saying I should think about becoming a doctor, nurse or a veterinarian. “Hurt an animal or human…nope…no way…not me, ” I told her. She explained how she felt that I really loved helping animals and people. I was in Future Farmers of America and the ESP Extra Sensory Perception Club. Well, I went on to get my degree in Forestry/Public Information from Humboldt State University in Northern California -most of my customers don’t know that. My Dad used to tell people that the forest would never be the same because I would talk to trees, random strangers that would become friends and bring home animals in need. I worked for the Forest Service for a few years in Oregon near Crater Lake. Beautiful place if you haven’t had the chance to visit.
