Exploring Life & Business with Nadja Young of Nadja’s Sweet TREAts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadja Young.

Hi Nadja, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I’ve always been the one in my family who loves cooking and everyone loved my food. I started doing my sister’s baby showers. I made some food and also did their treat tables. After that guests from the party started asking for treats and they wanted to buy them. So I started making and selling all kinds of flavored strawberries, cupcakes and other party treats. I always got good feedback and suggestions that I should do cakes. I was hesitant at first until I did a delivery and a client of mine was distraught about a cake she bought and when she got home it had slid and fell apart.

I began to tell her that the cake didn’t have support inside and could be the reason it collapsed. She tells me “See if you were making cakes I wouldn’t have this issue right now”. Needless to say, that really got me thinking. So I had another client who wanted a cake and I told her I hadn’t done them but I’d love to try. So I did my first cake and they really loved it. My family has also been very supportive. They order from me and they’ve always given me constructive criticism that helped me improve my skills. Over the years, my client base has really grown.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not at all. I have had a few obstacles along the way but I never gave up. I had a baby a little after I began and it made it a bit tough baking and delivering. There were so many nights I was baking with her literally strapped to me because I had a deadline to meet. About a year and a half after her birth our home was involved in a fire and we pretty much lost everything including our home. A lot of my baking tools and supplies were spared and in that moment I knew that God didn’t intend for me to quit or give up. My family lived in a hotel for about seven months until we found a home. During that time, I still baked. My sister allowed me to use her kitchen, so every morning I’d get up early get all my supplies together go to her house and prep, bake and then take deliveries. The day we got the keys to our new home and moved our things from the hotel I was literally baking that day lol, because I had an order that day. So I have faced a little hard road, I just kept at it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nadja’s Sweet TREAts?
I make cakes, pies and all kinds of treats and desserts for parties, events and weddings. I even make small orders for clients who just would like something for themself. Local pickup, but I also deliver. I’m on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. You can order on Instagram or Facebook or call or text me at (909) 915-7145.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes. I learned to adapt. While no one was having big parties or events they still wanted to celebrate loved ones. During this time, I was a medium for people who wanted to send something special to a loved one or small cakes to celebrate a birthday at home. I also did a lot of individually packaged treats and things for when people were having drive-by birthday parties. Things can change very quickly and you have to be flexible and willing to change things up.
