Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 1996, I became one of the first customers of fledgling internet service provider Earthlink Network.
I quickly became interested in this thing called the World Wide Web and started to learn how to build a “web page.”
Writing the code in a text editor, I went on to build my first website, which 27 years later, is still running.
Driven by an innate desire to solve problems and help others, I continued to build and administer websites for others while always looking for the simplest and most efficient and effective solution.
I noticed how much time I was spending on maintaining basic functions like web security, backups and site speed and then I realized if I was spending this much time as a technical person, other not-so-technical people must be going crazy trying to figure it out on their own.
When my girlfriend was frustrated with her current hosting provider, she asked me, “Can you do this? Why don’t you do what they’re doing!”
That was the deciding moment to create something that I wished already existed. Something that had all the features I was looking for built into the service so the user wouldn’t be troubled.
And so Happy Camper Web Hosting was born. I built this company from nothing, completely bootstrapped. It’s mine and now I get to enjoy my client’s happiness.
The name is exactly what I want my customers to be… Happy Campers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The technical side, I learned very quickly, and I already knew what I wanted the company to be so building the back end was not that hard.
The big struggle is being the little fish in a gigantic pond. Companies that have been around for 20+ years with 17 million clients! How do you stand out in that arena? I talk to friends, they talk to their friends and it starts to spread. People slowly start to recognize you and remember your name.
I help out in the forums and groups and listen to the problems people are having with their current hosting. “I just got hacked; what do I do?” “This last update broke my site…help!” I try to offer simple solutions and get them rolling again.
Building up trust is the hardest part. People would rather stay with bad hosting with a company that has been around a long time than take a risk with a new company that has better service.
It’s not all bad as I see people moving away from the behemoth companies where their service is slipping and customer support is lacking and finding companies like mine that really care about the customer experience.
There are over 1 million new domain names registered around the world every month so there is definitely room for quality hosting.
