Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Carlson.
Hi Luke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ironically, my professional journey didn’t start in a courtroom — it started in the ocean. I was a competitive surfer growing up on the east coast of Florida, and that passion eventually pulled me west to California in pursuit of better waves. Surfing taught me a lot: discipline, timing, and how to navigate unpredictable situations under pressure — all of which, it turns out, translate remarkably well to law and business.
After relocating to California, I found myself brushing up against the entertainment industry and began exploring entertainment law. But the work lacked the edge I was looking for. I’ve always been drawn to strategy, political theory, and high-stakes problem-solving — and those elements came to life in litigation. Real estate and business law quickly became my arena of choice, where I could combine intellectual rigor with practical results.
Early in my legal career, I had the opportunity to acquire the boutique law firm where I was practicing. That was a turning point. I didn’t just want to run a firm — I wanted to build something mission-driven. I wanted to create a legal team that didn’t just represent clients, but empowered them.
That vision ultimately became LS Carlson Law. Today, we’re one of the most respected firms in California and Florida representing property owners in disputes against overreaching or dysfunctional HOAs. We’ve built a national reputation on being fierce, strategic, and results-oriented — but what sets us apart is our purpose. We don’t just litigate. We advocate. We educate. We empower.
From launching the Bad HOA book and podcast to advocating for reform, everything we do is about putting the power back into the hands of homeowners. That’s what drives us — and that’s what will continue to define the firm as we grow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anytime you challenge the status quo, the road is anything but smooth. From the beginning, our mission to empower homeowners and push back against bad HOAs has invited criticism — not just from the opposing side, but from within the legal industry itself.
When we first started producing educational content, launching our Bad HOA podcast, and writing the book, we were met with skepticism. A lot of veteran attorneys, particularly in traditional firms, told us we were wasting our time. They didn’t understand why we were focused on public education or legislative reform. Their mindset was: just get more cases, grow your docket, and stay in your lane.
But we never subscribed to that model. For us, this work is about more than just winning cases — it’s about changing an industry that has operated in the shadows for far too long. It’s about giving homeowners a voice and showing them they’re not powerless. And we knew early on that doing things differently would invite resistance. It’s disruptive. It’s uncomfortable for people who benefit from the system as it stands.
But that resistance only fueled our commitment. We leaned into the criticism. We stayed focused on our long game: solving the actual problem, not just treating the symptoms. And that clarity of purpose has been transformational — not just for the firm, but for every attorney who works here. We’re not just practicing law; we’re part of a movement. And that gives the work meaning in a way that many lawyers never experience.
So no — the road hasn’t been smooth. But it’s been worth every step. And as we continue to grow, advocate, and innovate, we welcome the friction. Because in our view, if no one’s pushing back, you’re probably not pushing hard enough.
We’ve been impressed with LS Carlson Law, PC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
LS Carlson Law is a results-driven litigation firm with a strong and unwavering focus on representing homeowners in disputes against overreaching or dysfunctional homeowner associations — what we call Bad HOAs. While we also handle a wide range of business and real estate matters, we’re best known for being the go-to firm when homeowners need a serious, strategic team to push back against abuse, overreach, and institutional bullying.
Since the firm’s founding in 2006, our mission has remained clear: empower property owners and protect what they’ve built. We don’t represent HOAs — never have, never will. We’re proud to be one of the first firms in the country to unapologetically plant our flag on the side of homeowners and say: enough is enough. The imbalance of power between HOAs and homeowners has gone unchecked for decades, and we’ve made it our business to shift that dynamic — one case, one client, one reform effort at a time.
But LS Carlson Law is not just a law firm — we’re at the helm of a movement.
What sets us apart isn’t just what we do, but why and how we do it. We’ve invested heavily in educational initiatives to give homeowners the tools they need to fight back — even without an attorney. Our Bad HOA podcast, our best-selling book, and our public advocacy campaigns are all extensions of a firm-wide belief that knowledge is power, and true service goes far beyond the courtroom. Our legal work is aggressive and strategic, but our deeper mission is empowerment.
And yes, that has invited resistance. It’s unconventional. It’s disruptive. But we’ve never been interested in simply growing a book of business — we’re here to solve a problem. We’re working to fix a broken system. And in doing so, we’re creating a space where our clients feel seen, heard, and powerfully represented — not just legally, but culturally.
Our brand stands for more than legal outcomes — it stands for justice in places most people never expected to find it. And that’s something we’ll never compromise on.
