Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After being married for more that two decades, one day I got a knock at the door that turned my life upside down. It was a postman who gave me several letters of certified mail. I was informed at that time, out of the blue, that all our properties were in foreclosure including the house we were currently living in. So I had to go back to work to try to save our home and provide for my three children. I began work immediately, working two jobs,but it was not enough. I lost our house. After 25 years of marriage. I had to start my life over from scratch with nothing, no job, no money, no house. Depressed, angry, and frustrated I turned to God for a way out of this maze of hopelessness. I prayed to God to help me, show me, and direct my path. I submitted myself to Him, and He in turn showed me the way. Baking would be the path to rebuilding my life because baking was one of the things that I did best, So, I decided to rely on what I was blessed to do, which was baking and selling my desserts. As my reputation as a baker began to grow among family and friends more and more orders started coming in. Out of this personal crisis Brown Sugar Cupcakes was born. From my oven into your home, Brown Sugar Cupcakes is spreading my love for others and love of baking one bite at time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been a lot of ups and downs. The road to Brown Sugar Cupcakes has been filled with twists and turns with peaks and valleys, but through it all, with the support of God, my family, my friends, and my loving new husband, I, Brown Sugar Cupcakes, have persevered. Some of the struggles that I have encountered have included refining my products, streamlining my baking process, and delivering my products to customers, especially in other states.

As you know, we’re big fans of Brown Sugar Cupcakes. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Brown Sugar Cupcakes is a “family ” business created by Lisa B. At Brown Sugar Cupcakes our slogan is “we create cupcakes one cupcake at a time.” Our focus is to produce the best cupcake possible. How do we do this? Our cupcakes are made to order. Whether it be gluten free or sugar free, you can choose from a variety of icing or toppings for any occasion. We also use fresh ingredients with no preservatives. This process ensures full flavor and freshness that other factory or assembly line cupcakes just can’t match. From my kitchen to your home, we deliver cupcakes as ordered to your specific taste. Therefore our products are always to your liking. We prepare your cupcakes with an attention to detail and a healthy dose of love, because at Brown Sugar Cupcakes we put love in everything we bake. We have also expanded our dessert menu to include cakes for all occasions including graduations, birthdays, and sweet sixteen parties. We also now offer peach cobblers, dutch apple pies, and an assortment of chocolate covered pretzels, cookies, and strawberries just to name a few. We listen to our customers’ requests and try to fulfill any baking need they desire.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, I believe the general public will utilize more home based bakeries to meet their baking needs. I also believe baking will again become a part of the school curriculum like home economics.
