Exploring Life & Business with Kristian Franklin of Angelic Organics Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristian Franklin.

Hi Kristian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Angelic Organics because, for most of my life, I didn’t feel connected to my own hair. Like so many Black girls, I learned early that my natural texture was “too much,” so by sixteen I was chemically straightening it until it broke off in clumps. I didn’t have the language for it then, but I was trying to hide. Years later, after doing the big chop and trying to start over, I realized the real problem wasn’t our hair. It was the products we were being given.

In 2020, I went back to the basics in my kitchen with DIY treatments, herbs, and oils, just trying to understand my curls again. What started as a personal healing ritual became a quiet obsession. I returned to school in 2022 to become a certified formulator because I wanted answers rooted in science, not marketing. The deeper I went, the more I uncovered how harmful so many textured-hair products actually are and how underserved our community still is. That lit a fire in me.

By March 2025, I launched Angelic Organics with a mission to make textured hair feel luxurious, intuitive, and deeply cared for. Every formula is plant-based, EU-compliant, and created by my own hands. And every bottle carries the message I wish I had growing up: everyone deserves a good hair day.

Today, the brand is more than products. It’s a movement grounded in healing, routine, and reclaiming confidence. I’ve been able to speak on panels, partner with wellness organizations, win pitch competitions, and build a community of women who finally feel seen. This journey has been equal parts personal transformation and purpose, and I’m just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been anything but smooth, but every challenge has shaped the brand into what it is today. When I decided to create products for textured hair, I knew I was stepping into a space where our needs have been overlooked for decades. What I didn’t expect was how hard it would be to unlearn everything I’d been taught about my own hair. Before I ever formulated a product, I had to confront the internalized belief that our curls were “difficult” or “unprofessional.” That mindset alone took years to undo.

The business side came with its own hurdles. I was laid off while overseas, went back to school to become a certified formulator, and bootstrapped every step of Angelic Organics on savings, late nights, and faith. I made dozens of formulas that failed before I found the ones that healed dryness, reduced detangling time, and finally brought moisture back to curls that had been thirsty for years. Building trust with salons and retailers was another challenge. As a new, Black-owned brand, walking into stores and pitching myself wasn’t always met with openness. I had to grow thicker skin and learn to stay confident even when the door didn’t open.

But the hardest part has been juggling it all—being the formulator, the marketer, the packer, the founder, and the face of the brand—while still holding onto the mission. What kept me going was knowing that women like me needed safer, more effective products they could finally rely on. Every obstacle pushed me to get clearer, smarter, and more grounded in why Angelic Organics exists.

We’ve been impressed with Angelic Organics Hair, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Angelic Organics is a plant-powered, science-backed luxury haircare brand created specifically for textured hair. We specialize in products that deeply moisturize, strengthen, and simplify the wash-day experience for curls and coils. At our core, we’re known for two things: performance and purity. Every formula is handcrafted by me, a certified hair-care formulator, using EU-compliant ingredients that prioritize scalp health, hair growth, and safer beauty. Our line reduces detangling by up to 50 percent and gives users noticeable moisture after their very first wash.

What truly sets us apart is the mission behind the products. Angelic Organics was built to heal the disconnect many of us grew up with around our natural hair. For decades, textured-hair consumers have been given the most toxic formulas on the market. I decided to challenge that by creating a brand rooted in ritual, wellness, and ancestral grounding. Our products don’t just work— they feel good, smell like a spa, and create routines that help women feel more confident, seen, and nourished.

I’m most proud that we’re on track to become the first textured-haircare brand pursuing EU-standard certification. That level of safety and integrity is rare in the industry, and it matters deeply to me. I want people to know that Angelic Organics isn’t just another beauty line. It’s a movement toward clean, intentional haircare that honors our curls rather than trying to tame or control them.

For readers discovering us for the first time: we offer a full four-step ritual system plus a Discovery Kit for anyone wanting to try the line. We also partner with salons, head spas, and wellness organizations, and I frequently teach workshops on textured-hair education and safe ingredients. My goal is simple—make it easier for people with curly and coily hair to experience moisture, growth, and joy in their routine, without spending hours in the bathroom or sacrificing their health. Everyone deserves a good hair day, and we’re helping make that real.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Even though I’m not originally from Los Angeles, this city feels like the place where I truly came into myself. What I love most about LA is its diversity—people from every background, every dream, every lived experience, all building something with conviction. It’s a city of visionaries and changemakers, and being surrounded by that kind of energy gave me the courage to start Angelic Organics. As a girl who grew up in Detroit, the youngest of five, I never imagined I could one day create something that would make a real impact. LA showed me that my story, my voice, and my purpose mattered.

It’s also the place where I found alignment with community in a way I never expected. Being able to collaborate with local nonprofits, host workshops, and help women reconnect with their natural hair has been one of the most fulfilling parts of building this brand. I love that LA makes space for healing and reinvention. It’s encouraged me, challenged me, and inspired me every step of the way.

What I like least is something many people feel—LA can move fast. It can be expensive, overwhelming, and sometimes isolating if you don’t find your people. But once you do, the city opens up in the most beautiful way. It becomes a place where dreams genuinely feel possible. For me, LA isn’t just where Angelic Organics was born, it’s where I learned I could change lives—one curl, one story, one woman at a time.
