Exploring Life & Business with Kal Rakov of Clover Nodes LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kal Rakov.

Hi Kal, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins when my family immigrated from Bulgaria to Los Angeles with just $2,000, two kids, and no knowledge of English. Los Angeles became our home, a city that gave us opportunity, community, and a second chance. Watching my parents rebuild their lives from nothing taught me the value of hard work, faith, and perseverance. Those early experiences still drive me today.

By the time I was nine years old, I was selling newspapers on street corners, my first taste of entrepreneurship. Over the years that same drive evolved into a passion for building businesses. I launched my first e-commerce venture over fifteen years ago right here in Los Angeles, and since then, I’ve had the privilege of employing hundreds of Angelenos through various operations. E-commerce gave me freedom, but more importantly, it showed me what connectivity can make possible. The internet became the great equalizer, a tool that allowed me to learn, grow, and build from anywhere. I owe nearly all of my success to it, which is why I’ve made it my mission to help others access that same opportunity.

In 2017, while attending Art Basel in Miami, a friend introduced me to blockchain through Bitcoin and Ethereum. The concept of decentralization and digital ownership fascinated me. A year later, my father, who’s always been my biggest inspiration, introduced me to Cardano, and something about its mission-driven, research-first philosophy resonated deeply.

Not long after, we discovered World Mobile, a project using blockchain to connect the unconnected and give communities ownership over telecom infrastructure. The concept immediately clicked for me because it combined my passion for connectivity, technology, and community empowerment. My father and I purchased our first EarthNode, and before long, Clover Nodes was born.

What started as a simple node operation has grown into a movement. Today, Clover Nodes operates multiple AirNodes, contributes to the EarthNode Alliance, and helps educate people around the world about decentralized connectivity. But my main focus now is local: bringing this model to Los Angeles and creating one of the first community-owned and operated telecom networks in the United States.

World Mobile is unlike any other network. It is the first blockchain-based mobile operator that is private by design, giving users control over their data while offering travel eSIMs, cell plans with built-in VPN, and even SIM-swap and identity-theft insurance up to $5 million USD. With more than 2.5 million customers globally, it is proof that people are ready for a fairer, more transparent, community-powered telecom.

My vision for Clover Nodes is to help bring that model to life in Los Angeles, empowering people to own the networks they use, to share in the revenue, and to enjoy true digital freedom. The city that gave my family a fresh start has always been full of dreamers, builders, and innovators. Now it is time for Los Angeles to lead the way once again, this time in building the world’s first community-owned telecom revolution.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every challenge I’ve faced has shaped the person I am today. I’ve been working since I was a kid, and that work ethic has followed me through every chapter of my life. When my family first arrived in Los Angeles, we had very little. I’ve done just about every kind of job you can imagine, from selling flowers under the freeway to valet parking cars at sixteen. Those experiences taught me humility, perseverance, and the importance of never taking opportunities for granted.

I’ve always been driven by the desire to build something meaningful and to create opportunities not just for myself, but for others. Even today, I work seven days a week. There are no shortcuts, no easy paths, especially when you’re trying to innovate in spaces like decentralized telecom and blockchain infrastructure. But I’ve learned that consistency and belief in your vision will take you further than talent or luck ever could.

Running my e-commerce business for over fifteen years came with its own struggles, long nights, financial risks, market changes, and all the challenges that come with building something from the ground up. There were times when I wasn’t sure we’d make payroll or when everything I’d built seemed at risk. But through every setback, I’ve held onto the same principle: keep moving forward. That persistence has allowed me to employ hundreds of hardworking Angelenos and grow into new industries that align with my purpose.

Transitioning into blockchain and telecom has been another kind of uphill climb. Most people don’t understand decentralized connectivity yet. It takes patience to educate, to build trust, and to bring something entirely new to the mainstream. There are moments of doubt, but then I see the impact, families getting online for the first time through World Mobile’s model, people earning revenue from their own community networks, and privacy finally being restored to users. Those moments remind me why the struggle is worth it.

So no, it hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has had a purpose. From selling flowers under the freeway to building a community-owned telecom network, the common thread has always been the same faith, persistence, and the belief that no dream is too big if you’re willing to work for it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At its core, Clover Nodes is about empowerment. We operate within the World Mobile ecosystem, a movement that is redefining what telecom can be by turning it into a community-owned and operated network. For the first time in history, people can actually own a piece of the infrastructure that powers their connectivity and even earn revenue from it.

World Mobile began with a bold mission: to connect the unconnected. The team started in Zanzibar, where they built the first decentralized mobile network using a combination of blockchain technology, affordable AirNodes, and a sharing-economy model that allows local entrepreneurs to run their own network infrastructure. From there, the mission expanded to Tanzania, Mozambique, and Pakistan, bringing online access to people who were previously left offline. Now the model is making its way to the United States, with Los Angeles at the forefront of this next phase.

Clover Nodes was created to help bring that mission to life. We operate multiple AirNodes and EarthNodes that power World Mobile’s blockchain network and provide real-world connectivity. Our work bridges the technical and the human, helping communities install, maintain, and benefit from decentralized telecom infrastructure while also educating users about privacy, ownership, and economic opportunity.

What sets World Mobile apart from every legacy telecom company is that it is built on blockchain and designed for the people. Traditional carriers charge high fees, sell user data, and keep profits centralized. World Mobile flips that model completely. It is private by design, giving users full control over their personal data, and it offers travel eSIMs and mobile plans that include a built-in VPN and SIM-swap and identity-theft insurance up to $5 million USD, something no other carrier offers today.

On top of that, the network runs on a sharing-economy model where individuals and small businesses can host equipment like AirNodes and earn daily rewards in return. Imagine Los Angeles neighborhoods owning parts of their own network, with community centers, small businesses, or even families operating a node that helps provide coverage and connectivity to others nearby. That is what we are building.

I am incredibly proud that World Mobile has now reached over 2.5 million users worldwide, proving that the idea works. The network has processed billions of data packets across Africa and Asia, and it is only growing. My personal goal with Clover Nodes is to help lead this rollout across the United States and make Los Angeles the flagship example of what a community-owned telecom can look like in practice.

Brand-wise, Clover Nodes stands for connection, transparency, and ownership. We are not just operators; we are educators, builders, and connectors helping ordinary people participate in something extraordinary. Our mission is to show that the future of telecom does not belong to massive corporations. It belongs to the people who use it every day.

If there is one thing I would like readers to take away, it is this: connectivity is freedom, and now we finally have the tools to make that freedom available to everyone. Through World Mobile, communities can build their own networks, protect their data, and create new sources of income, all while helping others get online for the very first time. Los Angeles is the perfect place for this revolution to begin, and I am proud that Clover Nodes is helping lead the way.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice to anyone just starting out is simple: stay curious, stay consistent, and never underestimate the power of small beginnings. Every major success story starts with one step forward, often taken in uncertainty. When I first started my e-commerce business, I had no roadmap, no investor, and no safety net. I learned by doing, by failing, and by never giving up. That same mindset still guides me today as I build within the Web3 and telecom space.

I wish I had known earlier that it is okay to start before you are ready. Too many people wait for the perfect moment or the perfect amount of experience, but in reality, progress comes from action. You learn more in a few months of hands-on work than in years of thinking about it.

What excites me most about the future is that, for the first time ever, technology like World Mobile allows regular people to enter industries that were once closed off to them. Telecom has traditionally been controlled by massive corporations and government entities. Now, with World Mobile’s model, anyone can participate in building network coverage, whether you are a small mom-and-pop shop providing local WiFi access, or an entrepreneur operating multiple AirNodes across regions. The possibilities are endless.

World Mobile has made it extremely simple for anyone to get involved. You do not need to be a telecom engineer or a blockchain developer to participate. All you need is the drive to learn and the desire to contribute. It is a model that rewards real-world participation, where every connection made benefits both the community and the individual operating the network.

For entrepreneurs like myself, this represents a new era of opportunity. It allows us to step into an industry that has never before been accessible to everyday people. It is not just about building connectivity, it is about creating ownership, passive income, and a sense of pride in contributing to something bigger than yourself.

So my advice is this: do not be afraid to explore new frontiers. The world is changing quickly, and the barriers to entry in many industries are falling because of technology like blockchain. Stay adaptable, keep learning, and surround yourself with people who share your values and vision. Whether you are starting a small business, building your first AirNode, or exploring a completely new space, remember that consistency and belief in your mission will take you further than anything else.

If you keep your purpose clear and your integrity intact, success will follow.
