Hi Julie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My high school yearbook quote said, “She has the gift of gab,” so it might be challenging to keep this brief.
I grew up listening to Alison Steele on the radio on WNEW-FM in New York and knew my lifetime passion would be to play music on the radio, or so I thought. I went on my quest to do so and was accepted to the Television-Radio program at Ithaca College, which jump-started my career in broadcasting.
My first commercial radio job was as a music radio DJ and the first female on-air personality and voice-over artist at a 50,000-watt FM radio station in Upstate New York. Being the new kid or girl on the block, I started hosting the graveyard shift from midnight to 6 am on weekends on 99.1 The Whale (now classic rock). When the 7 pm – midnight spot opened up, I was thrilled to be offered the Monday-Friday evening air shift.
Staying in broadcasting, I gave up the headphones and moved to California from New York for a job and the endless sunshine. I worked in radio syndication, selling shows including American Top 40 with Casey Kasem and Soundtrack of the 60s with Gary Owens.
I was thrilled when the opportunity came to work at a broadcast network. I returned to New York to join RKO Radio Networks, the country’s first digitally delivered commercial satellite radio network as Manager, Affiliate Relations. Two years later, I was promoted to Director, Affiliate Relations, and returned to sunny Los Angeles to open the West Coast affiliate office for RKO.
While immersing myself in the leading edge of technology, I simultaneously became a pioneer of online dating, where I created my first dating profile 30 years ago.
While I wasn’t ready to give up my day job, I started writing profiles for singles as my side hustle. I attended numerous online success weddings while immersing myself in my quest to help singles find love. From dial-up in chat rooms to mobile apps and Tinder, I embraced it all.

I became extremely passionate about the intersection of love and technology. I started writing dating advice, which appears on popular dating apps and sites, including Bumble, eHarmony, JDate, Match, Plenty of Fish, Tinder, and Zoosk.
I became the go-to person in the media for online and mobile dating advice, and created niche advice sites including FacebookLoveStories.
Thinking back to when I was ahead of the curve, I created Mobile Dating BootCamp in 2012, featured in the Washington Post, where I paired singles with a new concept of using dating apps to find their match. These days, finding love on mobile phones has become the top way for singles to meet.
Reflecting on the dial-up days in chat rooms, I’m glad I stayed the course. As The Digital Matchmaker, I’ve been coaching singles on finding love for three decades and have provided business-to-business consulting in the dating, digital, and social media industries. Being a key player in the dating industry is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. I was awarded Best Dating Coach of the Year in the 2017 iDate Awards, the equivalent of our industry’s Academy Awards.
Coming from a media background, I’m very comfortable on-air and have appeared in over 2000 dating-related stories, including Access Live, BBC, CNN, E! Entertainment, Good Morning America, Good Day LA, the Today Show; Boston Globe, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour, Los Angeles Business Journal, Los Angeles Times, Men’s Health, Psychology Today, New York Times, Redbook, Women’s Health, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal.
I also appeared as an online dating expert and coach in several documentaries, including the Vice Media Documentary: “Mobile Love Stories” and the award-winning film “The Lonely Italian.”
So, as I enter my 30th year of helping singles find love online, those broadcasting roots of storytelling helped me launch a book and podcast in 2009 and provided me the tools to sleep in sound bytes and to be camera-ready every day for when the media calls.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being the first female radio personality was a challenge. My colleagues weren’t sure whether to treat me like a china doll that could fall off the shelf and shatter or treat me like one of the guys in a primarily male-dominated industry.
I felt then, as I do now, that authenticity is critical to the success of any project or job, and I didn’t want to sound like the guys or pretend to be a sex symbol. The authenticity voice paid off, as my air shift was ranked #1 in the Arbitron ratings for Adults 18-49.
I encountered similar issues at the network, where I had colleagues significantly older than myself reporting to me. I tricked myself into believing wearing my hair in a bun in my 20s would add credibility.
Today, I’m flattered to be called the “Pioneer of Online Dating.” I didn’t pioneer the industry, but embracing this new way to connect singles in the early days quickly became my beat.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I enjoy reading books that my friends write and consider myself a literary enthusiast. My. Mother was a reading teacher, so I got an early start with my love affair with libraries.
If a book festival or author’s book signing is in town, I’ll add it to my calendar. When I’m in a bookstore, I typically come home with three books.
For apps, since I work in different time zones seven days a week, I listen to the Deepak Chopra meditation app to fall asleep at night, and it helps me get that good night’s sleep I so desire.
