Exploring Life & Business with Joseph Park of Sprout Pediatric Dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Park

Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a family of dentists, so I was exposed to the field early on. During high school and college, I had the unique experience of joining my uncle, who is also a dentist, on humanitarian trips to Paraguay. These trips not only introduced me to the impact of dentistry on communities but also solidified my desire to pursue this career.

After college, I attended the University of Southern California for dental school. At first, I wasn’t sure if pediatric dentistry was the right path, but after graduation, I completed a post-graduate year at the University of California, San Francisco, where I worked with children with various medical complexities leading into a pediatric dental residency in New York.

During dental school, I lived in Pasadena and fell in love with everything about the area. After residency, I knew I wanted to return to the San Gabriel Valley to open a practice that serves the community in a way that aligns with my values. My goal was to create an independent office, free from outside influence, where I could provide the highest quality, evidence-based care to our patients.

Together with my wife, Dr. Jessica Pack—who is also a pediatric dentist—we established Sprout Pediatric Dentistry in Monrovia, CA. Dr. Pack always knew she wanted to work with children, and we are both deeply committed to providing advanced and compassionate care to our young patients.

One of our defining experiences was with our own child, who had difficulties nursing as a newborn. Through a team-centered approach, we worked closely with lactation consultants and eventually decided to proceed with a laser frenectomy. The experience opened our eyes to the importance of this service, as it improved our child’s nursing journey significantly. We knew we wanted to provide this option to our community, especially for families facing similar challenges. Today, we offer laser frenectomy using a state-of-the-art CO2 laser (LightScalpel), which benefits newborns with nursing difficulties and teenagers with speech issues by providing better outcomes and shorter recovery times.

We’re also passionate about giving back to the community, especially in ways that make preventive dental care accessible to children. At Sprout Pediatric Dentistry, we volunteer at local preschools and elementary schools, educating children and families about the importance of oral health. One of our proudest initiatives is our partnership with the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program, in collaboration with the Arcadia Unified School District. Through this joint effort, we conduct dental screenings at all the elementary schools in the district, providing students with essential oral health education, dental checkups, and free hygiene kits.

This program allows us to reach children who might not otherwise have access to dental care, ensuring that they receive guidance and resources for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. By working alongside Colgate and AUSD, we’re not only supporting individual families but also contributing to a healthier, better-informed community. For us, this outreach is a meaningful way to give back and promote lifelong dental health for children across the San Gabriel Valley.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
-Starting from scratch-navigating complexities of building a patient base, establishing a reputation in the community and managing day-to-day operations which requires both clinical and business acumen.
-Impact of COVID-19-adapting to new safety protocols, managing patient health/safety/concerns and maintaining a safe environment for staff and families (requiring flexibility and innovation).
-Opportunities for growth-each challenge along the way helped build resilience and learning. We were able to refine our practices and improved overall patient care. Helped us strengthen our commitment to the well-being of our young patients.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sprout Pediatric Dentistry. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
An important experience for me was going with my uncle, who is a dentist, on humanitarian trips to Paraguay. I saw how we made a difference in people’s lives, which helped me realize that I wanted to pursue a career in dentistry. It also taught me the value of giving back to the community.

I can’t forget to mention attending Dodgers games and watching my role model, Chan Ho Park, pitch. As the first Korean pitcher in the MLB, seeing him blaze a trail inspired me to follow my own path and do what I do today.
