Exploring Life & Business with Jill Drexhage of Oh Shirt and More

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Drexhage.

Hi Jill, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Three years ago, I left my 20 years career in banking. The scary part was that I was not 100% sure which direction I was going or how I was going to make money. I have always been a crafty person and love being creative and making things. My business started out when I was making shirts for myself and when friends saw me wearing them, they would ask me if I would make them one. Then, I started having friends reach out asking me to do a custom design on a shirt. As more and more people were reaching out to me for orders, I decided that maybe this was what I was meant to do. I was having fun AND making money. Oh Shirt and More is now in its 2nd year of business. I have expanded my product line to more than just shirts (thus the and More part of our name), including tote bags, coffee mugs, tumblers, coasters, and greeting cards. I go to events and festivals all over the central coast (I think I’ve already one about 40 events this year, including the CA Mid-State Fair). If you’re looking for a laugh or need a great gift for someone, you can check us out online at www.OhShirtAndMore.com or come find me at an upcoming event, which I post where I will be on Instagram @Oh_Shirt_And_More

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, I’ve had struggles and many of them. The very first event I went to as a vendor, I only sold one thing that whole day. It was a 6-hour event, plus the time it takes to set up and take down, it was a long day for very little reward. But I’m so glad I didn’t quit and kept going to events.

Another obstacle I had was complaints. Many of my items have adult language on them, which not everyone likes. In the beginning, I heard a few complaints and one in particular that sticks out. I was at an event and one of the event coordinators came over to me and asked me if I could either remove or turn around my “offensive items” and that they had a complaint. I told the coordinator that I didn’t want to cause any problems, and if she doesn’t feel like my booth is a fit for their event that she could refund me the payment I made to be there and I would gladly pack up and go home. Since then, I have added a big warning sign that I put out front of my booth “Warning. This booth contains adult language”. This has helped parents to guide their kids away if they don’t want their kids exposed to the language, and if an F-Bomb or two (or ten) isn’t your thing, you’ll know to keep walking.
