Exploring Life & Business with Jeongyun “JY” Kim of MUN Korean Steakhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeongyun “JY” Kim.

Jeongyun “JY” Kim

Hi Jeongyun “JY”, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“Devotion to Quality… Fulfilling All Five Senses of Our Guests” Interview with Jeongyun “JY” Kim, Owner of Mun Korean Steakhouse

Moon Korean Steakhouse has since opened in Koreatown, Los Angeles only a few years ago. But its roots run deep: over 40 years ago, Jeongyun’s parents opened DongDaeMun Deungshim in the heart of Seoul’s Fashion District. From them, she inherited not only treasured recipes, but also the spirit of hospitality and a tradition of accommodating guests with unforgettable gastronomical experiences.

For Jeongyun “JY” Kim, owner of Mun Korean Steakhouse, serving a steak is much more than preparing a meal—it is an art of devotion. Every cut of meat is selected with care, ensuring the perfect marbling, texture, and flavor that can only come from a commitment to quality.

“Our goal is not just to serve food, but to create an experience,” Kim explains. “From the moment a guest walks in, I want them to feel the warmth of our hospitality, enjoy the aroma and flavor of perfectly grilled steak, hear the sizzle from the kitchen, and leave with a memory that touches all five senses.”

Mun Korean Steakhouse has earned a reputation among locals and visitors alike for delivering an elevated dining experience. Guests praise not only the tenderness of the steak but also the balance of side dishes, attentive service, and inviting atmosphere.

Kim emphasizes that this success comes from consistency and sincerity. “Every day, we prepare as though it’s the first time. Customers can sense whether or not you truly care.”

Looking ahead, Kim hopes to expand Mun Korean Steakhouse’s presence while keeping the same intimate charm that makes the restaurant special. “Growth is important, but what matters most is staying true to our philosophy—serving with heart.”

At Mun Korean Steakhouse, every detail, from the cutlery to the final bite, reflects Kim’s vision: a place where passion for quality meets the joy of hospitality, leaving each guest fully satisfied in body and soul.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was only days after we signed the lease that COVID-19 broke out in the U.S. The timing was devastating, yet we chose to move forward—together with my husband, who has always been my greatest partner in both life and business.

We oversaw every detail of the build-out ourselves, from customizing the entire space to selecting each piece of dinnerware and utensil, sourced directly from a government-certified master of traditional brassware. We invested in smokeless grills with a ventilation system that costs twice the standard one, determined to create the best possible dining environment.

The journey has been anything but easy, and with every challenge we’ve faced, my passion and dedication have only deepened. It is a path without end—but one I embrace wholeheartedly.

We’ve been impressed with MUN Korean Steakhouse, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are Mun Korean Steakhouse, a premium Korean BBQ & Steakhouse in Koreatown, Los Angeles. What really defines us is how we blend heritage, quality, and hospitality into every meal, creating not just a dinner but an experience.

What We Do / What We Specialize In

We offer authentic Korean BBQ, with premium cuts of meat, beautifully marinated and presented, paired with a variety of banchan (side dishes) that reflect true Korean flavor and balance.

Each table is equipped with smokeless grills, and our ventilation system is designed to reduce lingering BBQ smells, so guests leave fresh.

Our menu includes assorted sets (“feasts”) and à la carte options, allowing guests to customize their experience—whether they want to try a variety of meats or focus on signature cuts.

We offer a full bar, plus a dining environment that supports both casual meals and special occasions like private events. We have private studios, mezzanine lofts, patio spaces, etc.

What Sets Us Apart / What We’re Known For

Heritage & Tradition — Our roots run deep. The recipes, spirit, and dedication to hospitality were passed down from Jeongyun “JY” Kim’s parents, who founded DongDaeMun Deungshim in Seoul’s Fashion District over 40 years ago. That legacy informs everything we do: the recipes, the way we treat guests, the focus on quality. (This element gives Mun more depth than your average steakhouse or BBQ spot.)

Exceptional Quality — Not just good meat — but very good meat, excellent side dishes, and care in presentation. Guests often comment that the meat cuts are tender, the flavor is precise, and even the non-meat elements (banchan, vegetables, etc.) are thoughtfully prepared.

Service & Hospitality — From how guests are greeted, to how staff often take charge of grilling or guiding you through what flavors go well together. The idea is to let guests relax and enjoy without worrying about every detail.

Ambiance & Experience — The design, the patio options, private dining, and even small touches (like reduced smoke, attention to lighting, combining modern aesthetics with warmth) help make it more than just a meal—it becomes a memorable night out.

What We’re Most Proud of, Brand-wise

I’m deeply proud of how we carry forward a family legacy—not just recipes, but a philosophy: hospitality that makes people feel welcome, cared for, and delighted.

I’m proud that we’ve managed to maintain high standards even through challenges (like opening during difficult times) and still deliver consistency.

Also proud that guests notice the difference: they talk about taste, they talk about atmosphere, and they return. That loyalty is meaningful to us.

What We Want Readers / Guests to Know

When you come to Mun Korean Steakhouse, you’re not just getting Korean BBQ — you’re getting a dining experience that’s rooted in heritage, built with craftsmanship, and designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind.

Whether you come for a casual dinner, a family gathering, a date night, or a private event, we have spaces, menu options, and service to match the mood.

Quality is never an afterthought. From meat sourcing to the utensils and dinnerware (even brassware, in some versions of the story), to the design of our build-out—these details matter and they reflect in what you taste and feel.

Finally, we want people to leave not only satisfied, but emotionally fulfilled—a little richer from the flavors, the care, and the memory of having a meal that engaged more than just taste.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing our guests leave with a smile, knowing they felt cared for and enjoyed not just a meal but an experience. Food has always been a language of love in my family, and when I see people connect over what we serve, it feels like I’m carrying that tradition forward.
