Exploring Life & Business with Jenny Duong of J Nexus International

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Duong.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Jenny Duong, founder of J Nexus International, a consulting firm that turns complexiTEA into clarity. I specialize in helping businesses and organizations utilize the full potential of their data, translating it into strategic insights and actionable outcomes by bridging the gap between data analytics, business strategy, and systems thinking. We not only help clients make sense of their data but also align it with operations, goals, and long-term impact. We turn raw data into a roadmap for growth and clarity.

My journey started when I was 16, working in my parents’ nail salon. I come from a Vietnamese immigrant household, where hard work was not just expected, it was ingrained. That work ethic shaped everything I did. In the salon, I learned how to build relationships, listen to clients, and deliver services that truly met their needs. This allowed me to open my own nail salon at 22 and operate it for four years. That business helped put me through school and taught me how to manage business operations, solve problems, and serve with intention.

During college, I originally planned to go to pharmacy school because I wanted to help people. But soon, I realized that I wanted to help by addressing the root causes of health issues. That realization shifted my perspective. I found that through public health, I could reach people earlier, inform them about risks, shape policies, and create programs that serve underserved communities. It gave me the opportunity to work on improving systems as a whole. That’s ultimately why I pivoted into public health, to create broader, more sustainable change.

After earning my Bachelor of Science degree, I went on to complete my Master of Public Health. I began working in the public sector, leading data collection and evaluation efforts across state and county agencies. I became known for turning complex data into clear narratives, whether I was presenting to executive teams, supporting frontline programs, or publishing public reports that helped guide decision-making across communities.

But I realized what I loved most was understanding people’s challenges and helping them reach their next level. Over time, I took everything I learned, from small business ownership to public health leadership, and created something with a bigger mission.

That is why I founded J Nexus International. I wanted to create a space where understanding client needs, systems thinking, and real strategic clarity work hand in hand. At JNI, we help businesses and organizations unlock the full potential of the data they already have, turning it into clear insights and real action. We are not just a consulting firm. We are a partner that helps organizations bring their vision to life with data-driven direction.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey wasn’t as smooth as it may seem. One of the biggest challenges in my journey has been learning to trust myself enough to explore new paths. My work in public health gave me valuable experience, from building strong teams to leading meaningful initiatives, and it sparked a deeper interest in understanding how systems, data, and strategy work together.

As I gained more experience, I started to feel a pull toward something more. I realized I wanted to stretch myself in new ways, to take everything I had learned about leadership, strategy, and impact, and build something of my own. Choosing to step onto this new path meant stepping into the role of the expert, the strategist, and the decision maker. It can feel overwhelming at times, but it is the kind of growth I have been searching for.

This journey is helping me become the kind of leader I have always hoped to be, one who listens deeply, thinks critically, and moves forward with clear purpose. I have realized how much I enjoy helping businesses and organizations grow, and how fulfilling it is to see my ideas and strategies put into action. It makes me proud knowing that the suggestions I offer strengthen processes, improve systems, and help organizations move closer to their goals.

Another challenge during my journey has been managing the self-doubt that creeps in when you are doing something new. Going from the physical, hands-on world of the nail salon, where I could see and feel the work I was doing, to a digital, strategic space where the results are more abstract, was intimidating. I often wondered if people would take me seriously or if I could really make something meaningful out of this vision I had. But every time I show up, every time I help a client find clarity, that doubt quiets down a little more.

I have never been afraid of hard work. I just needed to believe I could work hard in a new direction. And now, every lesson, every setback, and every uncomfortable leap forward has shaped the way I show up for my clients. I bring clarity, strategy, and a deep understanding of what it means to grow through challenge.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
J Nexus International is a consulting firm that helps businesses and organizations unlock the full potential of their own data, translating it into strategic insights and actionable outcomes. We work with businesses, nonprofits, and teams that have information but are not sure how to use it. Our job is to turn that data into clear, useful steps to help them move forward.

We focus on four main areas. Strategic planning is about helping organizations create a clear roadmap, like supporting a nonprofit in mapping out its next three years of growth. Program evaluation looks at what is working and what is not, such as reviewing whether a new service is meeting its goals. Data interpretation helps organizations understand the numbers they already have, like identifying why customer feedback has dropped. Data storytelling takes those insights and turns them into clear, engaging messages, such as a report that shows how a program is making a real difference.

Our services are built to meet organizations wherever they are in their journey. Organizations do not need to have everything figured out before getting support. Whether an organization is beginning from zero and needs help designing what information to collect, has data but is unsure if it is meeting its goals, or has incomplete information it wants to strengthen, we can meet them where they are. We listen closely, ask the right questions, and build solutions that fit each organization’s needs. Our goal is to help organizations align or realign their strategies with their goals using the power of their data.

Data is simply another word for information. Many organizations believe that they need perfect, clean, or complete data before any real progress can be made, or they believe that they do not have any data at all. In fact, valuable insights are often already available, sometimes hidden in customer surveys, interviews, testimonies, summary reports, and other everyday sources. Part of our work is helping organizations recognize, organize, and strengthen the information they already possess, no matter what stage they are starting from.

What we are most proud of is the trust we build. Clients often come in unsure of what they need and leave with confidence and clarity. JNI is not just about consulting. It is about helping people feel seen, heard, and grounded in their decisions.

If an organization is feeling overwhelmed, uncertain about its data, or unsure of the next step forward, it does not have to navigate the process alone. Every organization deserves to feel confident and clear about its direction. At J Nexus International, we work alongside organizations to organize their information, uncover strategic insights, and build a path forward.

We are here to help turn complexiTEA into clarity.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I do not typically see myself as a risk taker. I like to plan, weigh my options carefully, and make informed decisions. But over time, I have learned that some of the biggest risks do not come from carefully laid plans. They sometimes come from choosing the unknown over the expected.

One risk I took in my journey was opening my own nail salon at 22. At the time, I had left my parents’ salon, moved to a new city, and worked at a few other salons to gain more experience. Eventually, I felt ready to step out on my own. What motivated me wasn’t just independence. It was the desire to create something that reflected how I wanted to work. I wanted to nurture meaningful relationships with my clients, especially since I saw many of them every two weeks. That consistency built trust, and I valued the ability to connect with people beyond just providing a service. Running my own salon taught me how to manage operations, navigate uncertainty, and lead with confidence.

Another major risk came when I chose to walk away from pharmacy school. I had worked hard to get accepted on my second attempt and thought that was the path I was supposed to follow. But when I discovered public health, everything shifted. I had always been interested in diseases, but I didn’t know there was a whole field dedicated to understanding and preventing them at a systems level. I was accepted into both pharmacy school and an MPH program at the same time, and choosing public health felt like a leap into unfamiliar territory. For the first six months, I constantly questioned my decision and whether I had made the right move. But I held onto the belief that it would all work out, and the more I learned, the more I felt I was exactly where I needed to be.

Those experiences prepared me for an even bigger leap: starting J Nexus International. The turning point felt similar to when I opened my salon. I felt the pull to take ownership again. With the experience I had gained, I wanted to help align systems and empower others through data. I saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between raw information and meaningful strategy, and I knew I could help organizations unlock their potential by making data more approachable and actionable.

With launching JNI, one fear I had was not being taken seriously on my own. Without the backing of a company or brand, I worried that my voice would not carry the same weight. But I moved forward anyway, believing that there were people and organizations who needed exactly what I had to offer. They just didn’t know where to find it yet.

What has surprised me most since taking that leap is not just the growth, but the warmth and support I have received. The people who have learned about my journey have welcomed me with open arms, wishing me well and cheering me on. That kind of encouragement reminds me why I started this in the first place.

Today, I see risk not as something to avoid but as something essential. Risk creates space for growth, and stepping into the unknown often brings us closer to the work we are meant to do. If I could go back and give myself advice, I would say to keep pushing for what you want. Success does not happen overnight, but every step forward, even the scary ones, will be worth it.
