Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenika Kurtz.
Hi Jenika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Somehow I celebrated the ten year anniversary of J. Kurtz Design earlier this month, time has flown by! I started in Los Angeles in 2005 as a design assistant and moved my way up to owning my own firm, working with some wonderful architects, designers and builders along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
All things considered, I have had a wonderful experience in this business. I have certainly learned some tough lessons along the way but, I must say, I chose the right path. It hasn’t been easy but it has been rewarding and I would do it all over again if given the choice.
We’ve been impressed with J. Kurtz Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a boutique interior design business all on my own. I have some people who help me with certain aspects from time to time but, for the most part, it’s just me, and I love being able to offer my clients that direct access. I am hands-on for every part of a project, I have eyes on every detail.
Design-wise, I focus on letting the architecture of the home speak first and adapt the style that client would like to see according to that. It doesn’t really make sense to fill a mid-century modern home with Cape Cod style furnishings. From there I like to keep a balance of scale, color and space. No matter what the particular style, I try to make each space feel fresh, calm and welcoming. Over the years I have learned that I can give the best experience to the type of client who trusts fully in my ability to bring them the best options to choose from so I specialize in taking the reigns of a project and allowing the client to focus on only the fun stuff. We don’t need to go shopping together, that’s my job 🙂
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Ooooo, this is a great question, considering all the advances in AI. Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed at the thought of it but then I remember that things have always been adapting and changing and the tools can always be used in new and innovative ways that only enhance what I design. As far as trends go, I think it’s fascinating to see them come and go and repeat! It’s always amusing when I find myself gravitating towards something I absolutely would not even consider a couple years ago. Funny enough, this topic just came up with a client a couple days ago, we were each laughing about how this even applies to plants. Ferns, to me, used to be so old and staid but now I can’t get enough of them.
