Exploring Life & Business with Harvey Castro MD MBA of Harvey Castro Dr GPT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harvey Castro MD MBA.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Dr. Harvey Castro, an emergency physician, entrepreneur, and AI futurist deeply committed to transforming healthcare through innovation. My journey began in the emergency room, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges clinicians face daily. These experiences ignited a passion in me to seek solutions that could enhance patient care and streamline medical processes.

In November 2022, I started exploring the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT. I utilized them to automate routine tasks such as drafting patient appointment reminders, writing letters of medical necessity, and creating home care instructions. This hands-on experimentation led me to a pivotal realization: the synergy of human expertise and AI—what I term “human + AI > best human > best AI”—can surpass the capabilities of either alone.

Driven by this insight, I authored several books, including ChatGPT and Healthcare: The Key to the New Future of Medicine, aiming to bridge the gap between technology and medicine. I also developed over 30 healthcare-related smartphone apps designed to assist both professionals and patients in navigating the medical landscape more efficiently.

My commitment to advancing healthcare extends beyond clinical practice. I serve as an advisor to the Singapore Ministry of Health and have delivered keynote speeches at global events such as the Texas Medical Association’s TexMed conference and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). In recognition of my contributions, I was honored with LinkedIn’s “Top Voice” award in 2023 and was included in Dallas Innovates’ “AI 75” list in 2024.

Through these endeavors, I continue to advocate for the ethical and effective integration of AI in healthcare, striving to ensure that technological advancements serve to augment, rather than replace, the human touch in medicine.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in New York City with a single teenage mom, being kidnapped by my father at five, working three side-hustles to pay for med-school, launching nine free-standing ERs right before COVID, and betting early on AI in health care—all of that has made my road anything but smooth. Those detours are exactly what shaped the playbook I later distilled in Success Reinvention. Below is the longer, first-person look at the bumps and breakthroughs.

Early Life: Adversity as a Classroom

I was born in Spanish Harlem to a 16-year-old immigrant mother who supported us on welfare and grit.
When I was five, my father abducted me; the ensuing legal fight taught me that safety and stability are never guaranteed—they’re engineered.
Those experiences forged a hunger to “rewrite the odds,” a phrase I still keep on my desk.

Paying for the White Coat

Scholarships covered only part of med-school, so I waited tables on weekends, sold pager plans (yes, pagers!), and joined the U.S. Army Reserve as a dental assistant to make tuition. Each shift confirmed my mantra that resourcefulness beats resources.

Professional Detours & Pivots
• Bootstrapping Trusted ER. After residency I co-founded nine free-standing ERs across DFW—without venture capital. Cash-flow gaps, hurricane-level staffing shortages, and a surprise real-estate crash nearly wiped us out twice.
• COVID Whiplash. We opened our flagship hospital eight months before the pandemic. Overnight I was juggling PPE shortages, burnout, and nightly TV interviews to calm the public. The crisis doubled my conviction that digital tools must off-load clinician stress.
• Betting on AI Early. Between 2010-2015 I built 30+ medical smartphone apps—many flopped—but the coding lessons paved the way for my first-in-class book, ChatGPT & Healthcare, and advisory roles with ministries of health.

Success Reinvention: Why I Wrote It

I kept noticing that the same playbook—clarify purpose, prototype fast, and “fail forward”—worked whether I was pitching investors or comforting a trauma patient. I poured those lessons into Success Reinvention so readers could shortcut a decade of scars in a few hours.
Writing it was its own obstacle course: I had to carve 4 a.m. slots between night shifts, and my first draft got rejected by three publishers for being “too raw.” That feedback pushed me to pair data with storytelling—something I now bring to every keynote.

Key Takeaways I Carry Forward
1. Adversity isn’t a detour; it’s the syllabus.
2. Resourcefulness scales better than capital.
3. Reinvention is a cycle, not a milestone—hack it, test it, repeat.

If my journey proves anything, it’s that smooth roads rarely make skilled drivers. Each pothole became a case study I now teach—from med-students to CEOs—on turning setbacks into launchpads.
