Exploring Life & Business with Hailey Zhang of zirobio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Zhang

Hi Hailey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are Hailey Zhang and Miles Lu, passionate coffee lovers who recognized the significant waste generated by used coffee grounds. Our inspiration stemmed from the idea of transforming this waste into something useful and eco-friendly. Hailey, being an artist, often enjoys using various materials for art and discovered that coffee grounds retain a lot of natural pigment. This led us to create GRIND Z, the world’s first pencil made from recycled coffee grounds.

We often dealt with coffee spilling on clothes, leaving brown stains, and cleaning the coffee pot often left our hands covered in grounds. This sparked an idea. Hailey, who has always loved drawing and designing, thought using spent coffee grounds as pigments for art would be fantastic. For any artist, having portable and easy-to-store materials is a dream, enabling creativity anytime, anywhere.

GRIND Z is dedicated to reducing waste and achieving environmental sustainability. Every day, billions of cups of coffee are consumed, and the grounds often end up in landfills, releasing harmful methane gas. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. Our product transforms this waste into a valuable resource, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.

Unlike traditional pencils, GRIND Z is made from 100% recycled coffee grounds, making it a unique, eco-friendly alternative. It’s free from synthetic dyes, offering a natural drawing experience. Our commitment to sustainability and innovation sets us apart from other solutions on the market. Additionally, compared to traditional graphite, GRIND Z pencils do not dirty your hands, and the coffee grounds are gentle on the skin, making them a perfect choice for both artists and everyday users.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe the primary challenge was that this was a process of creating something from scratch. We had seen several products made from spent coffee grounds, like shoes, scrubs, and cups, but no one had ever used coffee grounds as pigment for pencil lead. We conducted countless experiments, and the initial prototype of GRIND Z was actually created in our kitchen at home. We found the process of creating GRIND Z fascinating. However, we knew that to bring it to market and offer it to consumers, we would need higher production standards, stricter environmental guidelines, and overcome the physical and chemical challenges to ensure durability and functionality. To scale up production, we reached out to nearly 30 factories and finally selected one to partner with. We are still continuously improving the product.

Another challenge we face is market perception and customer awareness. While our current target audience includes many eco-conscious individuals, it will take more time and effort to educate and encourage a broader range of consumers to embrace the idea of “turning waste into value.” We are committed to promoting a sustainable lifestyle and hope that innovative products like GRIND Z will inspire more people to focus on sustainability.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My husband and I co-founded ZIROBIO because we share a common vision. In our work, I focus more on product design, marketing, and supply chain management, while he specializes in IT, operations, and finance. Our team is growing as we continue to expand.

Zirobio is an ambitious recycling biotechnology company dedicated to providing the industry with solutions for biobased recycled materials. The company’s mission is to drive the transition from traditional materials to biobased recycled materials. By offering businesses solutions for recycling biobased materials, Zirobio aims to promote sustainable environmental practices and bring eco-friendly products into everyday life. Currently, the company focuses on industry solutions and innovative product development using recycled coffee grounds.

Artistic creation is my passion and soul. I love oil painting and sketching. In my spare time, I often capture the stunning landscapes I encounter during my travels through my artwork. I have improved GRIND Z through hands-on practice, and I’m thrilled to be able to combine my hobby with my career. I’m also in the process of preparing for my personal gallery.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Our launch campaign on Kickstarter received a great deal of support, and we were honored to be selected as a “Project We Love.” When people are willing to purchase your product, that is the greatest form of validation. Many media outlets have also proactively covered us, using different languages to spread awareness about coffee grounds recycling and sustainable innovations. In addition, some coffee brands have reached out to explore partnerships with us. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and helped us.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to Huerta Blanca and Larry Johnson from the South Bay SBDC. In the early stages of our business, they provided us with crucial strategic advice.
