Today we’d like to introduce you to Geraldine Tissot Brown.
Hi Geraldine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a French native who grew up in the southwest, near Bordeaux. After completing my law studies in Bordeaux, France I went to San Sebastian, Spain for my Masters focusing on international and European law. I later completed an LL.M. at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, before passing the California Bar.
I joined the Law Offices of Laurent C. Vonderweidt over a decade ago, first as an intern, then as an associate, and am now the only other attorney outside of the founder Laurent Vonderweidt, who is also a Franco-American lawyer.
I’m licensed to practice in both California and France (Paris Bar), which lets me work transnationally on matters that regarding U.S. and French law. My practice centers on immigration and business matters for French-speaking individuals and companies, and I often advise clients on visas and immigration strategy for relocation to France, and the U.S.
Working in Los Angeles has given me the chance to serve an international community, from individual family immigration matters, to corporate matters, and investor immigration work. I also engage in outreach like podcast interviews and conferences to explain U.S. immigration challenges to the public. I am very involved with the french community, publishing newsletters and articles for French medias, consulting on immigration issues for French representatives, being referenced on the attorney’s list for the French Consulate and the U.S. Embassy in Paris.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an immigrant myself I understand the challenges of relocating to another country, navigating a new culture, language, legal system, and administration.
Moving from France to the United States to study law and then build a legal career came with some challenges such as navigating two very different legal systems and becoming licensed on both sides of the Atlantic, which was demanding, both academically and personally.
On a personal level, I also had to balance the cultural transition : working in a new language, adjusting to a different legal culture, and finding ways to stay connected to my French roots. As a woman and a mother to a young baby, trying to achieve a good work life balance is also an ongoing challenge.
These experiences made me a stronger, more resourceful lawyer. They also shaped the way I practice today, with empathy for clients who themselves are navigating immigration, cross-border transitions, and big life changes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Law Offices of Laurent C. Vonderweidt is a “boutique” law firm, with offices in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and a Paris correspondent. With Franco-american lawyers speaking English, French and Spanish, our team is uniquely equiped to assist clients with their immigration needs to relocate between France and the U.S.
We handle U.S. immigration law, for companies and individuals with a focus on business matters. Our services include business and investor visas, with company creation or aquisition, green cards, and citizenship; as well as French nationality and immigration services, including visa application, Certificates of French Nationality, Consular Transcriptions and many other french matters.
Our dual focus allows us to serve entrepreneurs, investors, professionals, and families navigating the complexities of relocation, expansion, or naturalization on either side of the Atlantic.
What sets us apart is our bilingual expertise, deep cultural understanding, and personalized approach. We take pride in being trusted advisors to the French and international community, guiding clients with clarity, responsiveness, and care through every stage of their legal journey.
How do you think about happiness?
I love immigration law because it combines law with people’s real-life stories, dreams, and futures. Every case is different. Behind each visa or green card application is a person, a family, or an entrepreuneur trying to build something new. Being part of that journey is incredibly rewarding.
Immigration is not just about paperwork; it’s about opening doors, creating opportunities, and helping clients navigate one of the most important transitions of their lives.
What inspires me most is the resilience and determination I see in my clients. Their stories remind me daily why this work matters.
On a personal level, what makes me happiest is my family, being a mother is the most rewarding and important job of all.
