Exploring Life & Business with Emily Chen of Kindred Dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Chen

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Texas, I spent many afternoons at the local dental office where my mother worked as a Registered Dental Assistant. Her compassionate care for patients over 20 years inspired me to combine my love for art and working with my hands with helping others in the field of dentistry. I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California in 2019. After gaining experience in various dental settings, I envisioned a practice where patient care is paramount, leading to the creation of Kindred Dentistry in Pasadena, CA. Our mission is to revolutionize dental care by setting a new standard of transparent, quality-driven treatment, and our goal is to build strong, lasting relationships where patients become kindred. At Kindred Dentistry, we offer a relaxed environment, an approachable atmosphere, and a calming experience, providing comprehensive services from preventive to cosmetic dentistry. We focus on personalized treatments and transparency to make your dental experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. I am proud to lead a team that is dedicated to providing hyper-precise care while building long-lasting relationships

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a dental practice is an exciting but challenging journey, filled with highs and lows. From the very beginning, there’s the pressure of finding the perfect location, navigating lease agreements, and dealing with unexpected construction delays that can test your patience. The financial burden is heavy, with high startup costs, equipment investments, and the stress of managing cash flow before the patient base grows. Hiring the right team and creating a welcoming culture takes time, and attracting new patients in a competitive market can feel like an uphill battle. On top of it all, dealing with insurance credentialing, billing complexities, and the steep learning curve of running a business can be overwhelming. Another major hurdle is dealing with insurance companies and helping patients navigate their insurance plans, which can often be confusing and frustrating for both parties. But despite the struggles, there’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing your vision come to life—watching patients walk through your doors, building relationships, and creating a space that truly feels like home. Every challenge faced makes success that much sweeter, and that’s what makes the journey worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
As a young dentist from Plano, TX, I chose Pasadena because it made me feel at home. The charming neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, and historic architecture remind me of the warmth and character I love about my hometown, in Texas, but with the added bonus of California’s beautiful weather. Pasadena’s incredible food scene, from trendy spots in Old Pasadena to hidden gems in Playhouse Village, makes it a paradise for someone like me who loves great food. Plus, being so close to Los Angeles means there’s always something exciting to do, yet Pasadena still maintains a relaxed, community feel. I also love the easy access to nature—whether it’s hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains or strolling through the Huntington Library & Gardens—it’s the perfect balance of city life and the outdoors.
