Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Allen Sung.
Dr. Allen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been driven to understand the story behind the struggle. My journey into this field began at UCLA, where I earned my bachelor’s in psychology, and continued as I pursued my master’s and doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. Through this extensive training, I have dedicated my career to the art and science of psychological testing and assessment.
My path has been rich and varied, from training with ‘Dr. Drew’ Pinsky at Las Encinas Hospital—then one of the top centers for addiction treatment in the country—to spending over a decade as a consultative examiner for the Social Security Administration, where I conducted thousands of evaluations for children and adults with disabilities.
That extensive experience instilled in me a clear passion: to provide evaluations that go beyond a simple diagnosis or label. This is especially important for the people we now see, many of whom are individuals and families wondering if they have ADHD, autism, learning differences, or other mental health conditions. Getting the diagnosis right can change the trajectory of a person’s life; a mistake can lead to years of wasted money and the wrong treatment.
This deep sense of responsibility is why I founded our practice, Huntington Psychological Services in Pasadena, on a simple premise. I always ask myself, ‘What kind of care would I want for my own family?’ The answer is an evaluation that is not only professional and backed by the latest science, but one where the clinicians and staff are truly invested in helping you or your child find a path forward. That commitment to excellence is the heart of our practice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our journey has been guided by a commitment to doing things the right way, which is rarely the easy way. I made the decision to leave a stable, well-paying career because I was passionate about creating a practice that could offer the highest quality evaluations—something I felt was deeply needed in Los Angeles.
That meant taking a significant financial risk at the beginning. It also meant being incredibly deliberate in building our team. We took our time, searching for clinicians who were not only exceptionally bright and competent, but who also shared our ethos of warmth and compassion. Our guiding principle has always been to focus on what is best for our patients, with the belief that if we lead with that, the business will sustain itself.
Of course, life tests your resilience outside of work, too. Earlier this year, my son’s school was lost in the Eaton Canyon fire, which was a tremendous challenge for our family and community. In the end, it reinforced the very message we share with our patients: when you face adversity, you have to find the strength to persevere and move forward. That experience, both professionally and personally, is now woven into the fabric of our practice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our practice is Huntington Psychological Services in Pasadena, and we specialize in providing one of the most important things a person can have: clarity.
Many of our patients are individuals or families at a crossroads. They’re facing struggles at home, school, or work and are asking profound questions—”Could this be ADHD? Is it autism? Does my child have a learning difference?” We help them find the answers. We specialize in comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations, which is a sophisticated way of saying we create the starting point, or roadmap, for a person’s mental health journey.
What sets us apart is our dual commitment to scientific rigor and human compassion. We use the highest quality, “gold standard” tests available anywhere, but we deliver that care with the warmth, kindness, and respect we’d give our own loved ones. Our priority is to get the diagnosis right because we know a person’s future can be shaped by that initial understanding. This ethos is why we’re so proud of our team; our highly selective process ensures every person you meet shares our commitment to excellence and empathy. When you leave our office, you leave with more than a diagnosis; you leave with a clear path forward.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Community is at the heart of everything we do, and we believe the best outcomes happen when we work together. We are always eager to connect with others who share our commitment to supporting individuals and families in Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area.
For our fellow professionals—whether you’re a pediatrician, psychiatrist, therapist, educator, or other mental health professional—we see ourselves as your collaborative partner. If you believe our services could bring clarity to a patient or student, we would be honored to connect. A simple phone call or email is the best way to start a conversation.
For our community partners, our support extends beyond our clinical work. We love partnering with local organizations on fundraisers, events, and volunteer opportunities where we can make a positive impact. If you have an initiative you think we’d be a good fit for, please reach out.
And finally, if our mission resonates with you professionally, we are always open to connecting with talented individuals who want to join our team.
