Exploring Life & Business with Dolores Park of Paradigm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dolores Park

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got into real estate as my “back-up” plan while working in the biotech world. I had been laid off from a job in 2007 after I had my 3rd child. At first it was devastating to lose my job, but later realized it was a blessing in disguise. While looking for my next job I was able to spend time at home with my kids and help my husband with his business. After going back to work in biotech and being there for about 5 years I saw the writing on the wall. There were talks of outsourcing, streamlining, and the company creating different divisions. I felt like I was training others to take over my job. I was divorced by then and had 3 kids I was worried about. I needed to find a back-up career that I could do if I were to lose my job again. I didn’t have the option of not working.

I was always interested in real estate, but didn’t pursue it as I had a great job with benefits. I started working with some investors flipping houses and ultimately got my real estate license.

At that time, I was also going through the buying process of my first home after my divorce. My agent was good, but I felt like it could have been better. I found this passion about the potential of real estate changing lives for the better and I wanted to help as many people as I could. I sincerely believe that everyone can own a home even if they are recovering from financial hardship or are first-time home buyers and don’t have a lot of money towards a down payment.

In June of 2015, I decided to take a leap of faith and dive in full time after only doing real estate part time for a few months. I knew to be successful I had to put in long hours and learn as much as I could. I worked with other investors helping with rehabbing homes, I worked on my own rehabbing projects and was building my foundation of the buying and selling process by going through it personally several times.

Over the years, I had opportunities to work with a few different brokerages to continue my education and build my client base with more of the traditional buyers and sellers. I learned so much by collaborating with different agents, having great brokers and learning how systems and processes could help take my business to the next level. As good as the brokerages were, I felt like something was missing or I was outgrowing them. With my continued desire to become a better agent and help more people including agents, I found a small boutique brokerage who offered me the position of Director of Operations. I immediately felt this was the “something” that was missing. This was my opportunity to contribute to building a brokerage that agents would want to work for and share my experience and knowledge with them. This also gave me the ability to have total control over my business and how I could offer my clients more tailored services. About a year into this journey, the brokerage was going through some changes and the broker and I were given an unbelievable opportunity to buy and take over the brokerage.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been an incredible journey, but it hasn’t been easy. COVID is one of the biggest hurdles I endured. Learning how to navigate selling a home during a lockdown and social distancing was challenging. There have been many sleepless nights, tears from clients, trying to find the balance between work and family time, stress and feeling like I need to give more and do more for my clients. I’ve had to make some really tough calls letting my clients know their offer wasn’t accepted for what was their dream home.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
