Exploring Life & Business with Charisse Lewis of Michael James Chandler Consulting & Recruitment or MJC Consulting & Recruitment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisse Lewis

Charisse, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After dedicating 20 years to the corporate world, I found myself hitting a wall in my career. Overwhelmed and burnt out, I had accumulated hundreds of unused vacation and sick hours, a clear indicator of my work-life imbalance. Realizing the toll it was taking on my mental health, I made the decision to take some time off to prioritize self-care. It was during this break that I discovered my true passion for guiding others in their career journeys. Recognizing the need to support individuals in navigating their own professional paths, I founded my business to provide services such as resume building, interview preparation, and identifying transferable skills. This venture not only allowed me to help others but also served as a pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey, where I merged my expertise with my personal values of well-being and fulfillment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as an entrepreneur has been far from smooth. I’ve experienced significant ups and downs, fluctuating from having no clients to managing a bustling workload with hundreds of clients at once. Personal challenges, including navigating divorce, enduring the impact of the pandemic, and coping with the loss of a dear friend, have added layers of complexity to my entrepreneurial path. Despite these hurdles, which have tested my resilience and perseverance, I’ve remained steadfast in ensuring that my business thrives and sustains my livelihood. Founding my business in 2018 marked the beginning of this challenging yet rewarding entrepreneurial odyssey.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
MJC Consulting, named after my three children’s middle names, embodies a deep personal connection and a vision for generational continuity. With the aspiration for my children to eventually lead the business, I strive to provide dedicated and personalized services to my clients. What sets MJC Consulting apart is my hands-on approach to job searching, where I meticulously review job descriptions and apply for positions on behalf of my clients. As a former recruiter, I focus on matching individuals with roles that align with their qualifications, alleviating the frustrations of the job application process. My expertise in crafting compelling and ageism-free resumes, addressing career gaps, and offering comprehensive career coaching sets me apart in the industry. While the financial gains may not be substantial, the intrinsic value I derive from helping individuals navigate their career paths is immeasurable, reflecting my genuine passion for empowering others in their professional journeys.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs transitioning from the corporate world is to embrace flexibility. Let go of the rigid schedules and structured routines you may have been accustomed to and be prepared for the dynamic nature of entrepreneurship. Understand that business success is not always linear – there will be ups and downs, and adaptability is key. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your vision. Without unwavering self-belief, it’s challenging to inspire confidence in others. Stay patient, persistent, and committed to your goals, even in the face of adversity.
