Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Lennon.
Hi Dave, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Torrance, CA. After high school, I studied at Northrup University to work on airplanes but ended up working in the automotive field. The idea of LumaMedia came to me several years ago working as an automotive technician in the LA area during the flip-phone era. Being fascinated by how the numbers illuminated on the number pad of my flip-phone inspired me to find out what other possibilities this thin lighting technology is capable of. While researching this ultra-thin lighting technology, I learned how it was a phosphorous light that was developed by military scientists back in the 1950s, and how it is more energy-efficient than any other light source in the world. Through extensive research, I learned everything I could by contacting cellular phone manufacturers who utilized this thin lighting technology. This phosphorous lighting source is thinner than a credit card and does not require much energy to activate. Being the car enthusiast that I am, I wanted to develop this technology into something larger than flip phones that could be used on cars and trucks. I experimented with laying translucent vinyl over the top of the phosphorous lighting panel.
As a result, the light of the phosphor shined through the vinyl, and lit up the printed images! This was my “Eurkea” moment for the beginning of LumaMedia. From there, I partnered with an electrical engineer to design our own phosphorous sheets and electrical units for the power needed to energize a large phosphorous panel to illuminate greater surfaces. From trial and error, I perfected the design by making my phosphorous sheets resistant to rain, water, and crash impact. I tested the impact capacity of this panel by striking it with a hammer against flat concrete, and the panels were unharmed. After testing my designs, I began wrapping printed vinyl over my light panel designs, and began illuminating vinyl signs. Through vigorous research, we perfected the design with a peel-and-stick method of installation. Soon this company began lighting up cars, boats, motorcycles, DJ laptops, billboards, menu boards, windows, trade show displays, and signs of every kind. LumaMedia was born. Over the years, LumaMedia has been designing and distributing our peel-and-stick technology around the world. Today we have a network of distributors and train our clients to install our products the right way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every endeavor has its challenges. Some projects were easier to install than others. We often had crazy installation requests from clients that we managed to pull off successfully. Other projects ran into physical limitations. LumaMedia has had a number of competitors try to knock off our product with lower grade technology and material, resulting in unreliable lighting products. Since we use the best quality materials in the industry, we prevailed where others have not.
As you know, we’re big fans of LumaMedia International. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The LumaMedia product is a form of inorganic electroluminescence, which utilizes an extruded polyester substrate that is UV ink receptive. In other words, it’s what lights up your images. Research has shown that LumaMedia is the most efficient light source in the world, compared to the other common lighting alternatives. At less than one third the thickness of a credit card, this product is extremely flexible and lightweight. LumaMedia can modify and selectively light any design imaginable and place it in, on, or around any surface. We are very proud that all of our product is 100 percent designed and manufactured in the United States, and LumaMedia offers incredibly rapid turn-around times, beginning at under one hour. We’re illuminating everything from banners and cars, to walls and furniture, and everything in-between. You can even depend on us for trade show signage. The LumaMedia concept takes standard graphics and evolves them into fascinating, radiant images that are extremely eye-catching. Effective advertising is all about getting people’s attention, and LumaMedia gets yours. In addition, the product is extremely versatile. LumaMedia can be powered by everything from solar power, to button cells , to AC Voltage. It all depends on the customers’ needs, and how green you want to go. The only limitation for LumaMedia is your mind.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking to make the LumaMedia lighting product an everyday solution for marketing purposes all over the world.
