Daily Inspiration: Meet Ziyu ‘Arwen’ Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziyu ‘Arwen’ Wang

Hi Arwen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in filmmaking through a deeply personal experience—coming out to my mother. Her heartbreaking reaction was a turning point, forcing me to confront difficult truths about identity, family, and the fragility of relationships. This moment ignited my desire to explore these themes through documentary filmmaking, which has allowed me to capture the raw, emotional complexity of human stories.

At USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, I’ve worked extensively as a producer on live-action, animation, and documentary projects, honing my craft and collaborating with talented peers. Through these experiences, I realized that my passion lies in telling stories that are intimate, sincere, and deeply connected to my identity. Now, I’m committed to using filmmaking to bring forth personal narratives that foster understanding and resonate with audiences on a meaningful level.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, the setback lies in the challenge of being vulnerable and honest. This difficulty often arises when I’m faced with deeply personal topics, especially during interviews with loved ones. A similar experience occurred while filming my mother and her response to my coming out. I want to create an open and trusting atmosphere where they feel comfortable sharing their truths, but I often find myself grappling with my own emotions and fears of judgment. Stripping away layers to expose raw feelings can be intimidating for both myself and those I’m filming. I’ve realized that vulnerability is essential for capturing authentic stories, yet it requires a level of courage that can be hard to summon. Balancing my desire to tell meaningful narratives with the need to maintain emotional boundaries creates tension, making it a continuous challenge in my filmmaking process.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work primarily as a documentary filmmaker and producer, specializing in personal narratives that explore themes of identity, family, and vulnerability. My focus is on creating intimate, authentic stories that resonate deeply with audiences, often drawing from my own experiences and those of people close to me.

I take pride in my commitment to ethical storytelling, ensuring that the voices of those I film are respected and their truths honored. I believe in the power of daily footage and archival material, as these elements truly capture the natural state of people living their lives. I have extensively incorporated them into my work.

What sets me apart from others is my unique perspective as a queer filmmaker from an Asian background, which informs my approach to storytelling. I strive to highlight underrepresented voices and create narratives that reflect the richness of diverse experiences. My dedication to vulnerability and authenticity enables me to tell stories that are not only engaging but also meaningful, fostering understanding and connection among viewers.

How do you define success?
I define success as the ability to create meaningful connections through storytelling and to evoke empathy and understanding in my audience. For me, it goes beyond recognition or accolades; it’s about the real impact my work has on individuals and communities. When someone watches a film I’ve made and feels inspired to reflect on their own experiences or perspectives, I consider that a success.

I cherish those moments when viewers reach out to share how a story resonated with them or how it helped them feel less alone. It’s in those connections that I find my purpose as a filmmaker. I believe that art has the power to bridge gaps between people, and if my work can spark a conversation or foster a sense of belonging, then I know I’m on the right path. Ultimately, success for me is about creating authentic narratives that not only engage but also inspire and empower others.
