Xiaodan ‘Risanta’ Li

Hi Xiaodan ‘Risanta’, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was three, I’ve worn the title of the ‘neighborhood adventurer’ like a badge of honor. It all began with a fateful encounter with Doraemon. At the tender age of three, I hopped on my trusty baby bicycle and set off on a solo world tour, determined to find my own Doraemon. For eight hours, I pedaled through the heart of the city, embarking on a quest that ultimately led to my ‘arrest’ by the uncle’s police and a well-deserved ‘lecture’ from my parents.

Fast forward to five years old, post-Harry Potter immersion. Fueled by a burning desire to uncover my hidden magic, I scaled the neighbor’s rooftop, expecting spells and enchantment. But my father had other plans – he gently pulled me back to reality, shattering my illusion that movie magic was real. This moment, though disillusioning, sparked a fierce passion for filmmaking, igniting my creative spirit.

To prove my devotion to the cinematic world, my father graciously introduced me to a film set, my first step into the enchanting realm of cinema. This visit was the catalyst that brought my cinematic dreams to life, and from then on, it seemed as if my entire childhood was lived in front of the TV and cinema screen.

Much like many others, my initial ambition was to be a screenwriter, a dream that took root during my high school years. I reveled in capturing the captivating stories and anecdotes of those around me, weaving them into captivating tales with a dash of the eerie. Soon, my notebooks circulated like prized manuscripts, adding a sense of excitement to the mundane school days. Subsequently, I joined various film clubs and participated in summer camps, enriching my understanding of the world of cinema.

It was in the summer of 2017 that I decided to embark on the American adventure to chase my dreams of being a filmmaker. Initially, my aspirations leaned towards being a director, with visions of turning the vivid stories in my mind into cinematic wonders. Yet, during my undergraduate journey, I learned that being a director required more than just a great script and vision. It meant mastering the art of financing, crew management, and overseeing every minute detail of production, from scouting locations to designing sets. This realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in film production at Chapman University in 2020.

During my academic years, I eagerly immersed myself in a kaleidoscope of productions, firmly believing that true expertise is born from hands-on experience. These experiences unearthed my talent for budget management and the juggling act of multitasking, introducing me to a new and improved version of myself.

Since my graduation in August, I’ve dived headfirst into the realm of commercial productions, an uncharted territory that has expanded my horizons even further. Now, I’m on an exhilarating journey to fulfill my cinematic dreams, ready to breathe life into compelling stories and transform them into unforgettable visual spectacles.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been marked by continuous challenges, beginning with the pursuit of my film dream in the United States as a foreigner. This initial challenge has become an enduring part of my path forward. Over the course of my diverse productions, I’ve encountered a myriad of challenges that spanned every phase of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production. Budget management was a constant tightrope walk, with the need to balance creative aspirations with financial constraints. Striking the right balance, allocating resources wisely, and ensuring cost-effectiveness was a delicate juggling act. Keeping everyone safe while adhering to tight schedules and creative demands was a continuous balancing act. Handling feedback and revisions required a delicate touch, ensuring that clients were not only content but also aligned with the company’s financial interests. Balancing creativity with the bottom line was often a tightrope walk as well. In retrospect, it’s challenging to single out a specific challenge that had the most significant impact, as it was the amalgamation of these varied experiences that has molded me into the skilled professional I am today. Each hurdle, whether it was administrative, creative, or client-related, has contributed to my ability to navigate the multifaceted world of filmmaking with resilience and adaptability.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m Risanta Li, an independent producer and recent graduate of Chapman University. Over the past five years, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from short films to feature films, commercials, web series, and documentaries. My reputation is built on my ability to thrive in diverse creative and professional settings. I’ve refined my skills across multiple genres and formats, comfortably taking on various roles in the filmmaking process.

One of my proudest attributes is my ability to learn quickly. I’ve typically tackled the majority of challenges in film production independently, rapidly acquiring and applying new knowledge to overcome obstacles. An illustrative instance is my thesis project, The Tree. Despite being a very low-budget short film, its quality remained uncompromised, and it was even successfully accepted by Indie Fest.

In addition to my producer’s expertise, I’m an enthusiastic learner, exploring different aspects of production. This includes tasks like crowdfunding planning in pre-production, script analysis, casting, and production design. I also delve into lighting intricacies for the cinematography team and extend my learning into post-production, encompassing editing, graphic design, and music composition.

My dedication to continuous education strengthens my relationships with my team. I prioritize understanding their domains of expertise enhancing our communication and collaboration. My hallmark is versatility and adaptability, enabling me to meet new challenges with zeal and consistently deliver high-quality results across a broad spectrum of projects.
