Daily Inspiration: Meet Williana Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Williana Chen.

Williana Chen

Hi Williana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in the 90s, I’ve always fascinated with graphics, colours, and aesthetics. When I watched TV, posters, and fashion magazines, those media were really big back then. Drawing and painting using watercolours always attract me, and I could spend hours and hours working on it even to create the colour that I want instead of using off-the-shelf colour paint. I guess that’s where I developed my interest in design

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
All smooth and bumpy roads have been part of the process. I thought I was pretty good when I was in design school, but when I started working, what I thought I knew doesn’t mean anything when you’re faced with the reality of the real industry. So, you learn along the way and try to find your strength

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m currently creative in a PR firm. I have been working in advertising agencies for more than 7 years as art director. I’m known for my craft in design and art direction. The part where I was most proud of during my work was being able to work with the finest beauty director in the industry and see the work come to life, and you know it was your vision that was realized. And recently, I was honored to have an opportunity to design one of the floats for the Taiwan Pride Parade. It felt great to have your design be part of a cause that could create an impact for the LGBTQ+ community.

I think what sets me apart from others is the way I see things and the reason behind it. Some people might have different points of view, but I was lucky to find people and mentors who see me and believe in me.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Definitely! Before Covid-19 I used to draw my life so much in work and couldn’t separate my life with work. However, during Covid, other than we’re in a lockdown I was also pregnant and had a baby during those years. So, I would say those years were tough when I was working remotely and juggling between work and motherhood, and I learned to eventually draw the line and focus on what matters most in my life. Which is my life and my family. Being a mother also lets me understand myself better helps me to find inner peace and rethink about my childhood, and remind me to what makes me love what I do and how it developed into my career.
