Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Macias
Hi Wendy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hola Hola! I’m Wendy Hummingbird. People come to me for a variety of reasons. Some of them may seek Bridal Makeup Services, others may come to me in search of Intuitive reflections or perhaps they are looking for some comedy with a lil spiritual message sprinkled in. I’m an artist, filmmaker with a strong affinity for Comedy, Mysticism, and the Unseen. As a young girl, I’ve dreamt of becoming a famous Director. I have created a few short films you can find on YouTube, but nothing big… Yet. It’s coming…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As someone with late diagnosed ADHD, it’s taken me a long time to gather myself enough to move forward with my passions in life. I always thought of myself as intelligent, talented and capable but when it came to believing in my abilities to make things happen for myself out of school, I struggled tremendously. I’ve had to battle a lot of self doubt and analysis paralysis over these last few years. I continue to push through believing in myself and creating a strong foundation through meditation and breath-work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In 2012, I co-created the video “Shit Mexican Girls Say” with my best friend and fellow filmmaker Eduardo Ivan Muñoz. It went mega viral around the world and we even made it onto Telemundo! Remember, this is the early days of YouTube, so hitting it big was a HUGE deal for us then. It’s still one of my proudest moments as an artist in LA. After going onto a decade long spiritual journey, I went into the healing/psychedelic space. In 2016, I started creating Mermaid Medicine music. I would sing ethereal lullabies into a loop station and use my keyboard to play drone music. I now create Spiritual Comedy content. I love adding an element of spirituality in comedy because in my opinion it’s the best way to deliver a message. Comedy has always been a huge part of my life and I felt like the Spiritual journey had me drifting away from being silly. As a Chicana, it was also very important for me to make relatable New Age content for Latinos as well. The spiritual community in LA was lacking Brown voices for a long time… So it was even more important to me to make us feel represented in the online space. I’ve taken a little hiatus to focus on my mental health these last few months. I’m also currently working on 2 scripts that I hope to to make into a reality next year.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as time well spent. If I can look back on a day and feel accomplished, then I was successful at least for the day alone. For other success might look like the big house or the fancy car, and while it surely evokes feelings of strong self worth, I think success in feeling at peace with your day to day life is the most important feeling of all.
