Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus In Retrogay

Hi Venus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Venus in Retrogay began as a heartbroken karaoke patron discovered by Kyle “PL” Davis at the Blind Donkey in LB. Eventually, this friendship led to jam sessions, which then led to the creation of “82L8(8 to Late)”. 82L8 was an alt-funk band out of LB with a similar dynamic to infamous Fleetwood Mac, leading to the early disbanding. Heartbroken, once again, Venus decided to incorporate her newly acquired bass skills into putting her heart back on her sleeve through solo shows. Venus has then decided to give being in a band again chance again as the bassist for Gummy, curated by touring musician Edgar Fernandez. When she is not preoccupied with Gummy, you can find Venus, aka Side Quest Queen Venus, in the cast of Silhouettes of Scarlet, a Hip-Hop Musical, , hosting at The Living Room in Downtown LA, or backing up her friends musically.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not just a stage name, Venus is a lover through and through. In the midst of the 82L8 drama, she went through a breakup with her fiancée, leading to an aggressive reframing of her life. Being it was the canonical, tragic first WLW romance, Venus fell into an deep depression immediately after. Since Venus initially did music for fun, she’s contemplated quitting music countless times, and she would have, had it not been for The Living Room DTLA. Venus wears many masks and one is a full-time student, aspiring to be an RN.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Venus is a vocalist and bassist primarily. She has been playing bass for a bit over a year, but Venus has no formal training in musi, outside growing up as a K-pop fan. It is all stemming from pure emotion. Venus aims to give people a glimpse into her complicated, huge heart through her performances. Venus is well-known for evoking emotion into the audience and her insane stage presence. Venus is a jack of all trades, so also being known for her impeccable style and hair, Venus has fallen into the world of modeling and acting. Venus aims to keep audience members wondering what’s next.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes Venus happy is relaxing or spending quality time with loved ones. She believes time is one of the most valuable things in the world, and Venus is no stranger to grief. Venus loves helping people because with having a rough upbringing, she knows everybody could use a little extra help every so often. If Venus had the world, she would give it to whoever needed it. Venus also loves petting and cuddling animals, so she’s not afraid to ask strangers for consent. Venus is also a taurus so she loves trying/cooking new foods. As a creative through and through, Venus also loves to put her emotions on a canvas, despite not knowing how to paint.
