Daily Inspiration: Meet Trenton Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trenton Williams.

Trenton Williams

Hi Trenton, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I took my first dance class at the age of 19. There, I discovered my love and passion for dance, and I also realized my potential in the craft. A couple of months later, I was offered a scholarship to move to Chicago and train under a very prestigious dance company. While with the company, I excelled quickly and decided then that I would focus my career to becoming a professional dancer. Once the training program was finished, I was promoted to a paid dance position within the company. I danced in the company for two years before moving to dance for a cruise line. After the cruise line, I moved to LA where I have been very fortunate to work some amazing opportunities. I’ve been featured on “So You Think You Can Dance”, Nike and Apple commercials. I’ve danced on stages throughout the Los Angeles area, and I am currently dancing as a featured ensemble cast member in Disney’s “Rogers the Musical.” My faith in God, His blessings, and hard work are what keep me going and striving for all that God has for me in my dance career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is all about ebb and flow. Some days are easier than others. Los Angeles presents many challenges every day from the cost of living to the sheer amount of competition within my career. I have days where I ask myself am I cut out for this lifestyle of working gig to gig, not having a guaranteed source of income to survive in LA, and always wondering when that “big break” will manifest. But I remind myself of who I am. A child of God, I am talented and hardworking, I am kind and remain humble, and I am not a quitter. There is space and opportunity for me. I will succeed in clinging to what I believe about this world and what I believe about myself. I am very thankful for my faith in God which is ultimately what keeps me going. When those hard times arise, I speak kindly to myself and remind myself of how far I’ve come and will continue to go.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a technically trained dancer meaning I am versed in ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance, I take pride in my techniques and my ability to create stunning lines and pictures with my body. Having this skill set allows me to also adapt very well in other disciplines of dance: hip hop, ballroom, commercial jazz, etc. I have a good knowledge of my body and how to manipulate it to perform the task at hand. I am known for being a very grounded and strong dancer. Because of my training, I am also great at choreographing dance routines. I think what sets me apart is my ability to learn all styles and dance and execute them proficiently. I am most proud of seeing where I started and seeing where I am now. From 19 to 33, I’ve been able to do many things that most people counted me out for.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My faith in God has been the biggest catalyst for my success. When times get hard and even in all the good that comes with this career having that foundation is what truly keeps me grounded and level-headed. Also, having a group of people in your life that will motivate you and steer you in positive directions is an absolute must. People who challenge you to be your best self and want you to succeed. The people I have chosen to be in my life mentor me in some way or another. I am able to ask for advice from my friends, vent or work through issues with them, or just be encouraged by them. So my advice: Choose wisely who you allow in your innermost circles and have a faith in something that will help center you.
