Tieshae Huntsman

Hi Tieshae, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Southern Taco was started six years ago when I was released from Federal Prison. I was mixed up in all the wrong things and found myself wondering what I was supposed to be doing with my life. I’ve always loved cooking; cooking was a way I got to spend time with my beautiful Grandmother, and the kitchen was my safe place. While I was incarcerated, the idea of Southern Taco came to me, so I started planning. The moment I was released, I filed my business name, and the rest is history. Southern Taco has been such a blessing and really my dream come true. I’ve worked with Mayors, Celebrities, and people around my community to provide delicious food.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road has been far from smooth. As everyone knows, the food business is very competitive. Everything that can go wrong has. Having funding to fully open the restaurant to finding employees to covid happening, but I never gave up, and with God’s grace, we’ve made it through all obstacles.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a chef, and I specialize in Southern-infused Mexican cuisine.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be. Everything worth having takes hard work, stay focused and never give up.
