Daily Inspiration: Meet Thando Skwatsha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thando Skwatsha.

Hi Thando, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My musical journey began at the age of 12 when I joined the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School. It was here that I mastered a lot of the musicianship skills that I rely on today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. There has been a lot of learning and from this, a lot of growing. I’ve heard a lot of “no’s” and this has taught me to fight harder for the things that I want and love.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multi-talented performer. I seek to combine heartfelt, uplifting melodies and powerful vocals to weave a tapestry of contemporary African sounds. Being on stage is one of my great loves and it is my extensive background as a lead choral singer that underpins this.

As a multilingual writer, I share stories poetically in my home language, isiXhosa as well as isiZulu and English.

I draw a lot from my Xhosa heritage, family and life experience and I try to craft stories that leave listeners with hope, love and consolation in times of hardship and joy, perspective and peace in times of plenty.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The weather is what I like best about this city and the traffic is atrocious.
