Daily Inspiration: Meet Tetro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tetro.

Hi Tetro, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thanks for having me back! In my last interview, I talked about what brought me to where I am. This time I’d like to share a bit about how my story is evolving and what’s coming up. Right now I’m really busy working on a secret project for a popular TV show, developing a new act that has never been done before. It’s been one unique challenge after another but I love solving problems. Developing new magic is often like that since performing things that look impossible come with all kinds of interesting obstacles to solve behind the scenes.

I’ve also been working on a new show for the Close-Up Gallery at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. I’m really proud of how it’s turning out and look forward to announcing show dates soon. Last year I won 1st place at the Magic Castle in the close-up strolling magic competition, and I’m returning again this year to compete for the title of strolling magic champion. Strolling magic is when a performer does a short close-up show and roams throughout a venue bringing the magic to each group. It’s one of my favorite ways to share magic since there is so much audience participation and the reactions are fantastic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Magic isn’t always easy but I find it’s always worth the investment to learn. It can also be risky or dangerous at times. I spend a lot of time working on new magic and experimenting to find out what works best. However, sometimes that means learning from mistakes like burning myself when practicing fire magic. The entertainment value seems to ratchet up when there is perceived risk or danger for the performer. That was one of the reasons why Houdini was so popular with his daring escapes. Of course, we work this all out in rehearsal so that when we step on the stage the audience’s intended experience is not actually put at risk. As professional entertainers, we need to make sure everyone has a great time so I’m willing to overcome any challenges to build an exciting experience for the audience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a professional magician and mentalist living in Los Angeles, I can talk a bit about what it’s like performing here and how that differs from somewhere like Las Vegas. When we think of magic in Las Vegas we think of big showrooms, heavy production, large audiences, and ticketed theater shows in hotels with flashing lights from nearby casinos. In Los Angeles, it’s a bit different. Besides the Magic Castle and a few other venues, we don’t have many extravagant showrooms like Vegas. While I do perform shows in hotels for large audiences, there seems to be a bigger market here for smaller and more intimate shows. I do a lot of shows for corporate or private events in private rooms of elegant restaurants, parlor shows in luxury homes, and strolling or roaming magic in the many amazing event spaces in and around the Hollywood area.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is about positively impacting the lives of others. I find immense fulfillment from contribution and helping to create positive memories for those I come in contact with. I think it’s important to try and find work that provides a sense of purpose day to day. Moreover, if you can have the flexibility and independence to make decisions for yourself and shape your own path, all the better!
