Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Hull.
Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a photographer for most of my life, but started pursuing it as a business in 2020. I’ve worked in several other fields previous to this: music (played woodwind instruments professionally), entertainment (as the music supervisor for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno), and in healthcare (as an ER nurse).
Since 2020, I’ve been building a business focused on supplying lifestyle – based photography used by small businesses primarily looking for online image content for web. I also shoot for people wanting documentary – style wedding and family photos. Also, portraits and headshots!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I struggle with being a “one-man band”. I’m constantly trying to juggle developing my photo skills, along with learning how to market myself and handle all the technical needs of a single person business – things like building and maintaining websites, email lists, and managing the financial side of things. It’s also a challenge to find and nurture a community of other creative people.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Whether at a wedding, shooting a portrait, or making photos for a small business, my goal is to find the honest truth in the photo shoot. I’m trying to capture the passion without making it up. Everyone (and every business) is interesting because they are unique, and they have a unique story to tell. I try to help bring that out.
For businesses, I think that’s the essence of good branding – helping you stand out, because there is no one quite like you doing what you’re doing.
For a wedding or a family shoot, it’s the real, honest moments that will tell the story. And it’s those moments that you’ll look at years from now to remember how you felt that day.
For a portrait, I’m looking for that fleeting glance or unguarded expression that shows the real you, not necessarily an “Instagram” moment.
How do you think about happiness?
I really love making photos of people – real life is so interesting!
