Daily Inspiration: Meet Sofiya Bokareva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofiya Bokareva

Hi Sofiya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a multidisciplinary artist based in the United States. My journey into art began with a family deeply rooted in creativity—my grandfather was a sculptor, my grandmother is a painter, and my father is a ceramicist. This background naturally led me to explore painting, sculpture, and ceramics from an early age.

I received my professional education at leading art institutions, where I studied sculpture, academic drawing, painting, and ceramics. While I work across various mediums, ceramics is the closest to my heart and the most fascinating for me at the moment.

In my art and research, I explore different directions and techniques, often delving into the intersection between art and science. My recent series of research articles, “Art and Oppression,” examines the influence of political regimes on art and the influence of art on political regimes.

As the Associate Director at Art-Prime Gallery, I am deeply involved in the development and realization of art projects and exhibitions. Currently, we are working on exciting projects like Synesthesia and the Prisoner Monument, with more to be revealed later.

My artistic practice is rooted in research and exploration, inviting viewers to engage in contemplation and discovery. This approach enriches my creative process and opens up new possibilities for experiencing and understanding art. I’m grateful for every opportunity and challenge that has shaped my journey and excited for what the future holds.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This road is always unpredictable and very exciting. In my relatively short career path, I have also experienced some challenges.
At the beginning of my art journey, the main challenge I eagerly took on was improving my art skills. One of the most emotionally challenging yet progressive moments was when I first joined the Academy of Watercolor and Fine Arts educational program. At that time, I had very little experience, while my peers were students from top art schools with years of training.

It felt pretty stressful, but this challenge pushed me to achieve something unbelievable for me at that time — I mastered strong artistic skills in just a few days of intense practice. Being surrounded by talented individuals who were more experienced than me allowed me to discover my abilities and make significant creative progress. I am very happy to have been part of such a talented group, as it helped me grow immensely as an artist.

I perceive the challenges I face now as an interesting game that I can never lose if I stay truly interested and focused on what’s important to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Since July 2022, I have served as the Associate Director and official representative at Art-Prime Gallery. Before that, I worked there as an artist and curator for more than three years. At Art-Prime, I manage internal processes and external communications, liaising with clients and partners. I also lead major ongoing projects, including the 9/11 Memorial Monument Project, the Scriabin Project: Synesthesia in collaboration with the Scriabin Society of America, the Rachmaninoff Monument Project in Switzerland with the support of the Rachmaninoff Foundation, the Prisoner Project, and other architectural and sculptural initiatives.

One of Art-Prime Gallery’s most famous projects is the monument “Rachmaninoff: The Last Concert,” installed in Knoxville, Tennessee. This three-meter sculpture is dedicated to one of the greatest composers in history, Sergei Rachmaninoff, who played his last recital in Knoxville in 1943. The monumental sculpture, made by the distinguished sculptor Viktor Bokarev, has national significance and is an asset to the city of Knoxville.
Art-Prime Gallery presented this sculpture as a gift to the United States, for which the team of the gallery received high recognition from the American cultural and artistic community and gratitude from the city government. The project was realized with a grand opening in 2003 with the support of the City of Knoxville and partners.

Art-Prime is a distinguished cultural organization with a team of multifaceted artists and talented professionals who create and realize art projects worldwide. The projects often focus on science, art, culture, religion, as well as advocating for peace and human rights through art.

This work gives me amazing opportunities for creative fulfillment and the chance to engage in large-scale, meaningful work. I am most proud of our ability to combine artistic excellence with social impact, creating works that resonate deeply with diverse audiences.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
When I think of the people who have truly shaped me as a professional and a person, my father, Denis Bokarev, stands out. He didn’t teach me how to sculpt or draw directly, but he showed me by example the incredible skill it is and the many opportunities it opens up. He taught me how to communicate effectively with all kinds of people, whether they are outstanding professionals or colleagues. His sense of fairness and impatience with inequality have deeply influenced my own values and formed a strong foundation for my personality.

I am also immensely grateful to my family for their endless support and inspiration. They believe in me more than anyone else, and even when a desired accomplishment seems impossible, they help make it happen. Their unwavering faith in me has been a constant source of strength and motivation.

Additionally, I gratefully take this opportunity to send a big thank you to those who have been of great influence and support to me: Vitya Dvoretsky, Vladimir Tropp, Viktor Ostapenko, Dmitry Rachmanov and the Scriabin Society of America, Adriana Stoiber and Steinway & Sons, Nathalie Rachmaninoff and the Rachmaninoff Foundation, Anton Kogut, Audrey Anastasi, David Friedman, Moshe Sayer, Bill Snyder, West End Synagogue members and the congregation, and my friend Serafim Malakhov.

Furthermore, I have been fortunate to work with an incredible team at Art-Prime Gallery, whose talent and dedication have been instrumental in our success. The collaborative environment and shared passion for art have allowed us to achieve great things together. Our clients and partners have also played a crucial role, providing invaluable support and helping to bring our projects to life.
