Today we’d like to introduce you to Shi Forte.
Hi Shi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My jewelry journey hasn’t been as long as it feels, surprisingly. I started my business about three years ago after spending a lot of time with another creative during covid! My friend Be and I literally spent every day together and during that time he would be working on his business. He makes custom gowns (Duhbuhlyoo), and he had orders to finish every single day! I was seeing this and felt so inspired by his work ethic, especially during such a rough period in the world! I remember thinking about things that were of interest to me, and jewelry popped up. I knew this was perfect for me because I love jewelry, but I had a hard time finding quality, affordable pieces that match my style! Two weeks later, I had a small inventory of handmade necklaces and a website in the works. I told my friends about it, and they were so supportive. A couple of them even sent me a couple hundred dollars to help me with supplies to make more pieces! Shout out to Darion and Janet; I appreciate them forever! I will be honest and say I moved extremely fast with very little planning, but my first drop was so successful, I was genuinely mind blown. I knew I had to continue to see it through, and here I am today!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it has been smooth, but it hasn’t necessarily been a rocky road. In all transparency, most of the struggles and obstacles I’ve come across have been self-inflicted. Sometimes, I overthink and let my anxiety get the best of me when it’s time to work. This brings on a huge level of creator’s block that last long periods of time, making me less consistent. I also struggle with imposter syndrome quite often! That is something I’ve been working on lately as I turn thirty, and I come across opportunities such as this one (being interviewed by Voyage!!!).
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I hand make jewelry but I’m not exactly a “jeweler” per se. I love to create brand new necklaces and chains from scratch but I’m also into reconstructing old pieces into new ones! I’m known for making unique styles that could be described as alternative and edgy with a dash of elegance. I’m most proud of the way I have been able to pick my business up after a long block and hiatus. I’m also extremely proud of some of the customers I’ve accumulated. I’ve made jewelry for several notable and established creators. It’s a good reminder that although I barely have a following, I am still being seen! I think what sets me apart is simply the fact that there aren’t many people in the city, if any, that are hand making the type of pieces that I am.
What do you think about happiness?
Honestly… having supportive family and friends makes me the most happy. I genuinely don’t think this is something I would’ve been able to see through without knowing I had my people in my corner. I’m happy that their support has fueled my confidence and help turn my brand into something more than I expected.
