Today we’d like to introduce you to She Lavon
Hi She, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am She Lavon.. I am a singer/songwriter/producer+. I have been singing since I took my first breathe. My mom would put headphones around her belly—she said I would sing songs in the back seat of the car hitting all of the notes without even saying words because I didn’t know how to talk yet.
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and when I was 6 moved to Erie, PA, at 8 I moved to Cincinnati where my true musical identity was discovered and nurtured. At 12, I moved to York, PA where it was hard to be the artist I’d always wanted to. Finally at 20 I moved to Orlando, Florida for school at Full Sail University where I received a bachelors and a master’s within 3 years. January 2, 2020, my dog and I made our way over to Los Angeles by car. I had a really bad accident before leaving, that’s what pushed my spontaneity. I made the decision in 2 days to come to LA, in which I only had 230 bucks to my name. Now I’ve got an apartment, a car, and just proud.
Im an artist and I just happen to also be trans. I am an Rnb and Pop artist, my biggest influences being Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly and a few others.
I got really serious in music after learning the violin at 8, then self teaching myself piano, which I’ve been playing for 20 years, and learning how to use my voice through trial and error.
Since my transition started I’ve done a rebrand and am finally releasing music again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Before moving to LA my jeep was rear ended my a police officer who tried to make it my fault. Before this for 2 years, I was in an abusive relationship with a guy who tried to control my every move, and music life. I’ve run out of money here before, I’ve fallen behind, I remember during the pandemic being broke for months because unemployment was taking so long. I’ve definitely come a long way. I’m much happier.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
1. I am a singer/songwriter on the forefront, who mixes and masters her own work, I also produce it. I’m a one woman show because I love the entire creative process.
2. I am known for my 4 octave sometimes 5 octave vocal range, my welcoming loving energy, and for the songs I do. People always have a story to tell me in how music helped them.
3. I am most proud of my perseverance. This industry isn’t easy, and being a black trans woman and seeing what happens to us, I’m proud of the fact I’m never going to give up.
4. I think what sets me apart from others is the way I think, the way that I treat everybody, and I feel as though my sound is pretty unique.
Right now my song, “Rain On My Parade” is on the radio in two different countries including, Brazil! I’ve just rebranded and I have new music on all platforms.. and more coming soon.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Likes: I love the scenery, every corner is a vibe. I love the beautiful scenery of the mountains, hiking, all of the different activities you can get involved in is endless. It’s a melting pot. The night life is beautiful, I love how easy it is to network.
Dislikes: Through my platform I’m always stressing how unity and love could go a long way, and out of any place I’ve ever lived, it seems a vast amount of people are disconnected. Even within the LGBTQ, they go to pride and wanting to be seen and heard, but within the community nobody is looking out for eachother. I’ve only noticed that here. It’s important to hold on to a couple of good friends.
