Daily Inspiration: Meet Shaun Day and Matty Margallo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Day and Matty Margallo of The Sonic Writers. They shared their story with us below:

Shaun Day

We have been working together as The Sonic Writers for more than five years, bringing together over two decades of music production experience between them. In addition to our EP releases, “1” (2019) and “Synthesis” (2021), our production work has been utilized by a myriad of independent artists and working musicians alike (including Susan Lucas, Charles Grace, Maggie Bushiri, Des Flores, Alexia Anne, MALSI, Jon Martin, Future Music LA, and many more). With a unique, positive approach to music production, we specialize in turning an artist’s musical vision into a reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting out it is always difficult to get clients and get people familiar with The Sonic Writers brand. With persistence and a good amount of networking in the local Los Angeles scene, we’ve seen major growth in our business.

In regard to our creative process, we’re always looking to improve our productions and learn new techniques to level up our output.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are both seasoned musicians and are adept at taking on many roles in the recording and production process from music composition to songwriting to utilizing our working relationships in the Los Angeles music scene to hire the best session musicians, engineers, and recording studios. Integrating our experience, relationships, and specific musical vibe with an artist’s ambition is the centerpiece of The Sonic Writers’ ethos.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We take risks when submitting music for sync licensing and music placements. The process of creating music and hoping that it will be selected by a label or music supervisor(s) is one of the challenges we face with each song we produce. When a song isn’t selected, yes we are disappointed, but we continue creating towards the next project.

We also take risks in our music, whether that be using new/different production techniques, creating a unique sound design or challenging the norms of pop music structure by stretching concepts of music theory and arrangement.
