Today we’d like to introduce you to santedubois .
santedubois, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was raised all over Los Angeles. Most of my childhood was in Boyle Heights, Pasadena, Burbank, and South Central with my moms side of the family. I spent some time in Hollywood & DTLA when I lived with my dad. From the time I was 16 years old I was DJing and producing more than anything. I performed at Project X style house parties, various clubs and venues in Hollywood (I was one of those kids with black Xs on my hands), skate shops in Pasadena, and underground music fests in downtown. My first time going to Chicago for music was in 2013. I knew then – after being drawn to the sounds of Chief Keef and Chance and Flosstradamus and other dance music acts – I wanted to live in Chicago. I attended college in Chicago but was mainly living there for the music scene up until 2019. I performed all across the midwest and was able to perform at a couple of music fests while living there and really got my start DJing and producing for various rappers. Dance Music- specifically Trap & Bass & uptempo club music, has always inspired me. Although I am a rap fanatic and I probably listen to hip-hop and rap more than anything else, my music mainly leans on Electronic sub-genres and draws heavy inspo from the SoundCloud 2012-2016 boom.
I represent the future of underground dance music, rap, and Chicano/Latino culture. I’m proud to be Mexican and Argentinean and I lean on that and speak on that heavily because there’s not very many Latino DJs in ‘EDM’. My end goal for my music career is to be a standout brand that goes beyond DJing and music. I want to produce for rap & pop acts and eventually have a clothing and lifestyle brand. I am in pre-production and handing out some of the first batches to friends n fam for my clothing brand ‘Space Bass Exports’ (see photos).
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge has been enjoying the journey but I am working on that everyday and adjusting to the reality that competition doesn’t really exist. Nobody can compete with me because they’re them and I’m me… LOL. Some key lessons I’ve learned are do it yourself; learn how to do as much as you can independently so you don’t have to depend on other people, and: CARE. If you care about your art and are passionate and genuine the support will come. I always think of this quote from The Defiant Ones: Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine documentary: when Jimmy said: “I don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks, When you’re a race horse, the reason they put blinders on these things is because if you look at the horse on the left or the right, you’re going to miss a step…When you’re running after something, you should not look left or right…what does this person think, what does that person think? No. Go.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an underground legend. An urban legend to some who’ve known me for a while. I’ve been around a lot of different music projects and scenes and moments. I am forever grateful and feel truly blessed to be an Artist in today’s landscape. I’m a huge proponent of DIY and being an independent artist. The current state of the music industry is crazy AF! But I won’t quit and I’m on the way up. Soon I’ll be playing festivals and touring on a global scale and selling out clothing+product drops. Some artists I’d love to work with are; Tinashe, SadBoi, TroyBoi, Bino Rideaux, Vince Staples, and Rico Nasty. I’m currently promoting my mixtape ‘Event Horizon’ & my single ‘Soul’, which are 100% “Space Bass”, the genre I have coined for my original music. I dropped new music every month since August 2023 and plan on keeping this momentum going through 2025. In August 2024 I released 5 summer remixes- available exclusively on my socials and YouTube- they’re some of my favorite work. What else can I say about my journey as an Independent Artist, DJ, & Producer… The Marathon Continues.
