Daily Inspiration: Meet Samantha Preciado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Preciado

Hi Samantha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey right after I graduated college with a degree in art. I’ve known for a while that I wanted to do makeup, but my mom thought it was important for me to finish my education first (which I am insanely grateful for). Right after summer I started school at Make-Up Designory (MUD) in Burbank. It was the most intense, yet enjoyable educational experience I’ve ever had.

Before I graduated, I managed to land myself a gig on a film with the students at CalArts. In the mean time I was contacting people like crazy trying to find opportunities. Slowly, but surely photographers started responding and I even got the opportunity to assist Luigi Chamorro (makeup artist) for a photoshoot.

Now as time goes on I’m aiming to make my presence known on social media even if the makeup is just on my own face. The goal now is to showcase my abilities to a larger audience in order to bring more opportunities my way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Trying to have a career in a creative field is never always smooth sailing. Being new to the industry means nobody knows if you can successfully create what they’re looking for. That’s the kind of obstacle I had at the very beginning. I also had the classic struggle of thinking I’m not good enough. I tend to compare myself to other artists and think about why I don’t get the opportunities that they do. However, it’s important to remember that I’m still so new and the opportunities will come with time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for my editorial work. With photo shoots, the first look is always relatively natural. When it comes time for bumping up the look I always try to add something fun somewhere.

The more difficult and more intricate my work is the more pride I feel towards the finished product. I love when I come to work and feel challenged. To me it means I’m stretching my creative muscles and slowly becoming more flexible with my abilities.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I always do my best in life when I can step out and unplug for a while. I’m a big reader so books are a great way for me to do that. There’s always a fantasy series I’m trying to finish in my downtime.

Painting is also another way I unwind. I usually paint and draw on my iPad, but when I really have time I whip out the canvas and paints.
