Today we’d like to introduce you to Rian Carlo Abraham.
Hi Rian Carlo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I always loved making things and taking things apart to see how something worked. I loved to draw and design things on the computer. Over the years, I taught myself the basics of graphic design. After graduating high school, I entered Cal State Long Beach as a Mechanical Engineering major. While in the program, I felt like something was missing.
While working as a graphic designer on campus, I told my friend/mentor that I didn’t feel like I was in the correct field. I didn’t feel complete with doing Engineering. It was at that time he told me about Industrial Design. Switching from Mechanical Engineering to another major in my 3rd year of college was a tough decision, but after making the switch, I fell in love. I learned so many things from sketching ideas, 3D modeling, and prototyping products. I felt like I was at home. During my last semester in the Industrial Design program at CSULB, I landed an internship at a design consultancy in Orange County called ANDesign. During my seven years sat ANDesign, I was promoted to Lead Industrial Designer. I was able to work on numerous products for big brands, traveled overseas to visit our manufacturers, and also had the opportunity to meet many amazing people.
I was also able to gain more knowledge on consumer electronics, soft goods, manufacturing, and UX/UI Design for apps/websites. ANDesign was where I learned how to become more than just an Industrial Designer, it helped open doors to what I am able to do now and in the future. After leaving ANDesign earlier this year because of the pandemic. I was stuck at home like the rest of the world. I started to 3D print random items to help people out during these difficult times. I’ve been doing small projects here and there before all this, but nothing too big. This is when I decided I should take all the knowledge I learned in the past seven years and use it to help people. I started out small. Working with friends on small projects. Over the past couple of months, I have worked with a couple of different clients and help start-ups make their dreams into reality.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has been a couple of challenges along the way. Doing freelance, a project can be anywhere from a week to a couple of months. After completing the project, I would need to find another freelance opportunity as soon as possible to help pay for bills and what not. It’s also not a regular “9 to 5” job. When deadlines need to be done in time on a short notice, there’s a good chance of an all-nighter. At the end of the day, it’s all about balance and time management. How do I manage my time efficiently to hit those deadlines and not overwork myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am mainly an Industrial Designer with experience in Graphic Design. I specialize in consumer electronics but have also done a lot of baby products, housewares, and soft goods (backpacks, bags, etc.) products. I have also done branding and logo design as well as package design for many clients. Recently, I helped design a phone case for a start-up to address dirty touch screens and buttons during the pandemic. It was the first project I did as an independent.
From concept design, 3D CAD, and prototyping. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/acleancorner/a-clean-corner-never-touch-a-dirty-touch-screen-or-button) I think that having knowledge in all aspects of the design process and manufacturing is what sets me apart from others. I can sketch up your idea on paper, 3D model / 3D Print it, as well as design all the branding, graphics, and packaging you need for that product. I can also create all of the marketing assets with realistic computer renderings and product photography.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Check out my website/portfolio. If you have an idea for a new product or need graphic design work, I can help you out. I also provide 3D printing and vinyl sticker services.
