Daily Inspiration: Meet Ravyn Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ravyn Alexander.

Hi Ravyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story began as a dream I had ever since I was little. At first, I wanted to be a food critic, but as I grew up and started making my own meals at home, my love for food deepened. Who doesn’t love to cook and eat good food? I started off making dinners like pork chops, chicken and rice, enchiladas, and more.

Before all of this, I spent a lot of time with my grandma as a baby. Being under her care, I would watch her in the kitchen all day, every day, cooking like it was Thanksgiving. She found comfort in her cooking and fed everyone on her block.

My grandma had such a big heart when it came to food and music. She didn’t play about anyone being in her kitchen! I would just wait until she called me to come eat once everything was done. After her passing in March 2005, I was still very young, but losing her gave me a different kind of strength. About four or five years later, I slowly started cooking—it became my way of finding happiness and feeling close to her again, as if she were right beside me.

In high school (2012–2016), I began sharing my food with friends and classmates, and the feedback I received was always amazing. In 2019, I decided to start my own food business selling plates to see if it could become something real—and it did.

Since launching my business, things have been going amazingly well. I’ve had the honor of catering for people I truly look up to, like Storm DeBarge, one of L.A.’s most creative dancers and choreographers. She’s such a dope soul inside and out—her career and impact are inspiring, and she deserves all her flowers.

I also had the privilege of working with one of my favorite artists, Reason, a rapper whose music has always spoken to me. I was a fan long before we met, so when he reached out to book me for a gig, I was ecstatic! He told me he really enjoyed my food, and later booked me to cater a surprise party for his partner—which turned out fantastic.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t always been easy. I’ve faced ups and downs, including personal health challenges and struggles with certain clients I’ve attracted through my work. No matter how difficult things have gotten, I’ve never stopped. I’ve been put in some wild situations, but my faith in God has kept me grounded and my business moving forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What I love most about my work is the returning clientele and seeing how much people enjoy my flavors and plating styles. I specialize in recipe development and creativity through food.

I’m most proud of my ambition and determination once I set a goal. What sets me apart from other chefs is my personality, my heart, and the uniqueness of my food. I make many of my meals from scratch, and I spend a lot of time planning and visualizing my next level. The way people feel when they eat my food keeps them coming back for more—and that’s what drives me every day.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is the day my mother, my grandmother, and I went to Steven’s Burgers. We spent the afternoon laughing, eating, and simply enjoying each other’s company. It was one of our last moments together before my grandmother passed away, and I still think about that day often—it always brings me comfort and warmth.
