Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven Turbin.
Hi Raven, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a kid, I was very active. I loved dancing but never saw myself doing it professionally. I started listening to Skrillex in 2012, and it completely changed my world. I was waiting for the day I could go to my first rave/festival. I attended Hard Summer in 2018.
Being immersed in a world that was so loving and accepting, I wanted to be one of the people that created that joy for people. I started Hooping and learning to Gogo in 2018 with the goal of becoming a professional performer/entertainer. During the pandemic, hooping kept me active and distracted me from feeling isolated. When Las Vegas started to open again, I took classes to build my confidence and musicality. I made my Gogo Debut at Playa’s Playground at Area15 on New Year’s Eve of 2022. From there, I continued to expand my dancing knowledge and made my burlesque debut at Lilith A Ladies’ Night in Las Vegas. One of the gigs I am most proud of is when I Gogo danced at Cheapshot for St. Patrick’s Day. I had so much fun dancing on the bar and getting others to get up and dance with me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the main struggles of being a queer black performer is trying to prove your worth. A lot of companies have/want a certain type of girl or look. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what your skill set or energy level is, it just matters what you look like. One thing that I learned from those experiences though, is that not every performance space/gig is meant for you. The gigs that are for you will come to you easily & feel right.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a performance artist versed in flow props such as hoops & fans. When I am not using flow props, I love doing burlesque & Gogo dancing at events. I am known for always moving my body or having a hoop in my hand.
One thing that sets me apart from everyone is the fact that I am Unicorn. Most of the performers in Las Vegas have traveled to perform from a different state. I am often one of the only Vegas Natives in the room.
Dancing on top of the bar at Cheapshot for their St. Patrick’s Day Bodywork event was one of my proudest moments. I was dancing with some of my favorite performers & so many friends came out to support me.
When I am not expressing myself with movement, I am creating resin crafts such as keychains & jewelry for my business Kandiz Kreationz.
What matters most to you? Why?
The thing that matters most to me is the joy that I get from incorporating a new move into a routine. It allows me to see my own growth and progression as I drive further into performing. I hope to always feel excited about expanding my skills.
