Daily Inspiration: Meet Poison Ivory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Poison Ivory.

Poison, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up singing in my mother and father’s homeless ministry. Being the daughter of a minister gave me a giving heart but also taught me boundaries. I also fought and beat cancer. Singing in church gave me soul. Growing up around musicians gave me an ear. And listening to people’s life stories along with being the kid of a writer gave me perspective. I write songs about the human experience from the lens of someone fed up with being lied to by society. I write produce and play instruments. I’m experimental so I call my genre Alternative. I’m also extremely visual and grew up watching retro anime. I love storytelling so I hope my music helps somebody the way it heals me creating it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m a black sheep. In school I was extremely unpopular and made fun of, in church I never felt accepted as I am. And in my family they have come to accept that I’m not going to become a minister. That my music is my ministry.
I am without a doubt a rebel against any system that oppresses people.
Going through cancer was definitely a battle and so was so many other obstacles but my message to the world is clear. YOU ARE WORTHY: you just have to decide that you are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in showing up authentically as myself. Sure I play guitar produce and write my records as well as perform them live. But I will also show up with elf ears or my wardrobe will reflect the vibe of the music. I like giving people a world to enter. Life paying bills and surviving is already hard enough for people. If I can give someone a sliver of freedom or hope in what I create then that’s a pretty sweet pay off.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Los Angeles is a beautiful space for creatives to find their own voice. It’s a terrible place to not have boundaries or put your trust in other people. Remember… everybody’s looking for the map to the treasure so don’t be surprised by peoples actions or shallow intentions. It’s always folks that aren’t from here… so don’t give Los Angeles the credit of being fake. Take that finger and point it back at yourself or everybody flocking here. Lmaooo 😂
