Daily Inspiration: Meet Nubian Princess Whittiker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nubian Princess Whittiker

Hi Nubian Princess, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a creative person. I grew up with a mom who’s very crafty and into so many different things and who also dressed fly so obviously she would dress me fly. She saw my love for television and music at a young age so I grew up a theater kid. I grew up being in plays, dance recitals and so many different kind of performances. I was always inspired by the movies I would watch, the music I would listen to and what the people were wearing in these movies and music videos. With having a love for creativity and art my style obviously showed that and that’s really what birthed my love for fashion. I’ve always loved wearing different colors and expressing how I feel through my clothes. From the time I could start dressing myself by myself up until now I’ve gone through so many different style changes that have honestly made me the woman I am today. I’ve known who I wanted to be and what I’ve wanted to do for a very long time now. I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade when I told my mom I wanted to be a Fashion Stylist. Career day at my elementary school was coming up and my mom asked what I wanted to be and I told her. I wore the cutest little outfit, had measuring tape around my neck and glued a styled outfit that I designed on a big poster board. I used to be told “school is not a fashion show” all the time by teachers and other staff but no matter what they said it always was for me. Other than styling outfits for me, my friends and sometimes my parents, in high school my mom was managing local talent so I had the privilege of styling them for performances, photoshoots and more. After high school, I went to college for Fashion Merchandising and within my first month I had got a job styling for a popular online clothing store. After that, it’s just been up for me and my career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been hard because I have a lot of faith in God and myself but it also hasn’t been easy. I feel like with me being a black woman who’s usually the youngest in the room I have to prove to myself that I belong here because I’m good at what I do. Sometimes I hold a higher position than someone who may be older than me, so sometimes I feel as though I’m not being respected because of my age but I don’t allow that to stop me. Working in the creative field you have to believe in yourself wholeheartedly. I went through life changing stuff which made me need to take a step back and focus in on what I really love to do which is essentially being a creative and that’s in all aspects. I betted on myself, quit good paying jobs with a steady paycheck and went completely freelance and although I still have so many things I want to do I’m constantly checking off my bucket list.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an overall creative, I do a little bit of everything but what I would be most known for would be styling and creative directing. I specialize in styling my person clients, e-commerce and editorial. I’m currently the Senior Creative Editor for an LA digital magazine called DSRPT. Mag. Our magazine is a content engine focused on highlighting artist, musicians, designers, hometown heroes and all types of creatives. I do a lot at DSRPT., it’s definitely one of my favorite roles I’ve ever had. I get to interview and talk to artist and creatives from all different walks of life. I get to work with people who I’ve grown to love and we get on set and create dope covers and projects. I think what sets me a part from others is not only my love for it but my eye for detail. I like to tell a story with my work, I like creating the moments that sometimes people look over and capture that in a creative way.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my ability to try would probably be what’s been most important to my success. I always say if it goes with my morals then I’ll try it at least once. I’ve been asked to do so many different task that I wasn’t sure if I would be good at but with trying I find out all that I can actually do. Starting with a try, my “Everything I Can Do” list just continues to grow. I like challenges sometimes but I love learning and with trying comes getting my answer. God has blessed me with a lot of talent so I’m just here to use it.
