Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Guo.
Hi Mia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, I’m a designer deeply engaged with creating pioneering products within the realm of emerging technologies. My journey began in the traditional design space, focusing on architecture and installations. This path was a natural extension of my early passions, blending my childhood curiosity with my professional ambitions. Yet, a pivotal moment came a few years ago when I led a design project for a client at the cutting edge of technology. This project was transformative, revealing the complex challenge of connecting advanced technological products with their users. During this collaboration, I was struck by the vibrant intersection of technology and creativity—a fusion that was both thrilling and illuminating.
It wasn’t like I had an aha moment but more of a gradual realization that there was this whole other side to design that is balance of aesthetics and functionality. So, I started focusing on design for tech products, learning as I went. It’s been a journey with its fair share of ups and downs, but it’s exciting to be part of something that’s constantly evolving and setting standards for new frontier.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Diving into a career in emerging technology has been both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. One major challenge has been keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancement, which often outstrips market readiness. Working with cutting-edge technologies means I’m often exploring new territories, trying to find the right balance between innovation and market accessibility.
Equally important is the challenge of blending technology with aesthetics. In a domain dominated by functionality, I hold a strong conviction that aesthetic value is essential. This area is constantly evolving, and achieving the perfect harmony where technology operates efficiently while pleasing the user’s design sensibilities has been both rewarding and demanding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve dedicated myself to the field of experience design, with a particular emphasis on extended realities and AI. My approach is rooted in understanding the nuanced needs of users, aiming to integrate digital innovations into practical applications such as law enforcement training, fostering public empathy, and enhancing remote assistance. Beyond the design work, I’ve also ventured into the art world, curating exhibitions that blend technology with artistic expression. What I’m most proud of my work is this ability to not only innovate but also inspire. It’s about pushing boundaries, both in technology and in how we perceive its role in society.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has been a subtle but constant companion in my journey. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to live and study in places like China, Australia, the Netherlands, and the United States. This global exposure enriched my understanding of art, design, and technology and made me more adaptable and receptive to new ideas. The experience of transitioning between these different cultures, each with its unique approach to creativity and technology, has been invaluable.
Another stroke of luck in my career has been the chance to meet and work alongside brilliant minds. The mentorship aspect of my journey stands out as particularly rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of receiving guidance from industry leaders while also sharing my knowledge with others. Being under the tutelage of such insightful mentors has profoundly influenced my understanding of emerging technologies. At the same time, offering my experiences and insights has enabled me to support the development of aspiring designers.
