Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Langdon
Hi MELISSA, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been a tapestry woven with moments of challenge, growth, and resilience. This year, I lost one of my best friends, Rowley. Coming out of high school from a sheltered life, Rowley and his family took me in and helped me find my true self. Their love and support have been foundational in shaping who I am today.
I’m currently navigating a divorce from my husband, who I met when I was 15. We have two beautiful children together, born when I was 23 and 25. This year has been particularly difficult due to an ectopic pregnancy that led to serious complications. Despite being on birth control, the pregnancy occurred, and the initial treatment did not work, resulting in internal bleeding and a physically and emotionally harrowing experience at the hospital.
Amidst these personal trials, I completed my digital marketing certification at CSUDH. I am now focused on building my brand, “Behind Ocean Eyes,” drawing from my background in yoga and my passion for helping others. Although 2024 has been extremely challenging, these experiences have fueled my determination to grow and support my children on this journey.
Helping others has always been my guiding principle. While the future is uncertain, I am excited about the possibilities and the growth that lies ahead. I look forward to embracing this journey with my kids and continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I faced many struggles along the way, starting with the loss of my best friend Rowley this year. His family helped me find myself when I came out of a very sheltered high school life. His support was critical in shaping who I am today.
My relationship (marriage to my husband), which began when I was 15, has also been a journey of self-discovery. I realized that while I initially thought I wanted to be a traditional housewife, what I truly aspired to be was a strong role model for my daughters and a beacon of support for other parents who need guidance. I wanted someone who would support my vision of creating a more peaceful and loving world, but my marriage did not provide this. This realization was painful and marked a pivotal point in my life.
I also endured a traumatic ectopic pregnancy this year, which involved severe complications and a difficult experience at the hospital. The year 2024 has been incredibly challenging, but it has also been a year of growth and learning.
Additionally, I have struggled with drugs and alcohol, coming from a family that enjoys drinking and partying. Relaxing often meant having a drink to unwind at the end of the day. This lifestyle was not what I wanted for myself or my daughters, so I had to learn to balance this with a healthier lifestyle, away from partying and drinking.
Despite these challenges, I pursued my passion for digital marketing and completed my certification at CSUDH. I am currently focused on building my brand, “Behind Ocean Eyes,” with a background in yoga and a dedication to helping others. My ultimate goal is to support children by helping their parents become better caregivers, even though this isn’t something anyone can fully prepare you for.
These experiences have taught me resilience and have fueled my determination to make a positive impact in the world. I am excited about the future and the journey of growth I am on with my children by my side.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently looking to transition into a role as a social media manager for a health and wellness brand, which aligns perfectly with my background. I recently earned my certification in digital marketing from CSUDH and have a strong foundation in studio art from my studies at CSULB. My career journey has been diverse and fulfilling, starting with my work at Long Beach Parks and Recreation in the after-school program and coaching youth sports. I love sports, especially volleyball, which allowed me to channel my energy and passion. Competing in the Junior Olympics in 2005, where my team placed 4th in the nation, remains one of my proudest achievements.
Over the years, I have always gravitated towards roles that involve physical activity and wellness. I am certified in yoga and have worked at two Stretch Labs in the Long Beach/Orange County area, including a leadership role as Lead Flexologist at the Huntington Beach location. Helping people feel better in their bodies and promoting a balanced lifestyle has always been my passion. Our fast-paced lives often overlook the importance of slowing down and enjoying the little things, such as spending quality time with family and friends, and I strive to help others achieve that balance.
Currently, I am collaborating with a massage therapist to introduce a new type of therapy that combines yoga stretching, massage, and physical therapy. This innovative approach is the perfect “cocktail” for relaxing the body and enhancing its movement, aligning with my commitment to health and wellness.
What sets me apart is my diverse background and my commitment to helping others lead healthier and happier lives. My experience in digital marketing, combined with my passion for wellness and community engagement, positions me uniquely to excel in a social media management role. I am dedicated to creating authentic and impactful content that resonates with audiences and promotes a healthy, balanced lifestyle. I am most proud of my ability to connect with people, understand their needs, and provide solutions that make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters have undeniably been my family. Despite our differences, they have always had my back. I’ve been fortunate to have a wonderful stepdad and dad, both of whom have played crucial roles in my life.
I owe a lot to my friend Rowley, who recently passed away. Rowley was always there for everyone and played a significant role in my journey of self-discovery. He taught me to “let my freak flag fly,” embracing my true self without fear. Our time together at Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor is a treasured memory, and I’ve shared a lot about our experiences on my Instagram.
