Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Tuley.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in an idyllic suburb a little north of Houston, TX. Heavily involved in theatre, choir and performing live music around my little hidden community. Enrolled in 2015 at Oklahoma City University to study theatre. Worked at a minor league ballpark in entertainment as my summer gig. Avoided adulthood in 2019, securing an internship aboard a Carnival Cruise Ship and a Character Attendant job at Walt Disney World with their college program. Returned home in early 2020 to save up money, stayed there through you know what in 2020 and early 2021. Moved to Los Angeles, CA in April 2021. Worked a variety of fun to bizarre jobs to stay afloat. Started a band called Matt Tuley & the 3-4-5. Here we are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is both the best and worst time for anyone who wants to make music and share it. The barrier for entry has vanished, which is great but this means the pool got wider and it became a noisier world. That has been a struggle to accept but necessary. It has required me to stay more alert as the daily news can show where we’re all headed in this industry.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My band Matt Tuley & the 3-4-5. I write songs, and they help take it from an acoustic set with an audience of me to a fully realized song. It’s the closest thing to magic I’ve seen.
A large part of the work that I’ve gotten to do has been based around creating community and making a point to have people gather or rally around a cause. Backyard shows, charity events, theme nights. The name 3-4-5 comes from my college dorm room because I loved our open door policy. It was a place for people to belong for a little. That’s what I am hoping for in the shows we put on.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I was raised by very friendly people and I think that’s been helpful. Despite my own misgivings, they helped shape me to be someone who knows we are all better off helping each other.
