Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyanna Alexandra.
Hi Kyanna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So my journey to becoming a content creator/social media influencer is a bit of a journey. I started creating content with my ex-girlfriend in 2016 and took a break after the breakup to assess how I wanted to continue content creation. In that, I decided I would tell my story on coming out, how I navigated my family disowning me, my relationship failing, and my passage on dating women.
I created content on the LGBTQ+ community constantly for three years. In that, I realized that I was a queer woman currently dating a man, and I decided I wanted to focus on something else that was important to me: Plus Size Fashion and Body Positivity.
My goal in creating plus-size fashion and body positivity content was to showcase how plus-size/curvy/big/fat women are beautiful, sexy, and fashionable while not being confined to “invisible restrictions” that society has placed on women to be a certain way/body type.
I wanted to be able to create a space where women feel safe, expressive, and able to share their emotions or even a place where women can see someone who looks like them, being the person they want to be for themselves.
Growing up, I was so afraid to dress how I wanted to, wear what I want, or express myself through clothing the way I wanted to. But now, since I’ve found a way to love myself and adopted the motto “I do what I want,” I no longer live in fear but in bliss, celebrating myself and my body.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. No matter what sector I was creating content in, whether it was LGBTQ+ or Plus Size Fashion/Body Positivity, I always faced a lot of negativity, but more so in the Plus Size niche.
Since I started creating plus-size content in July, it brings out the trolls/the people who don’t agree with the type of content I’m creating. I’ve been experiencing so much disapproving/hate comments about my size or comments regarding my advocacy for plus-size women. It’s every day I post a piece of content, I get constant comments telling me, “I need to go to the gym,” “I’m too fat,” “stop promoting an unhealthy lifestyle,” and so on. When all my content does is tell women to love themselves and not let anyone dictate how they should dress.
But for some reason, that goes over everyone else’s head, thus the hate comments.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a social media content creator/influencer that creates within the niches of plus-size fashion and body positivity. What I think I’m most known for at this moment is disrupting the societal norms of what body beauty standards are. I constantly push the boundaries, and I’m very “in your face” about showing as little or as much skin as you want because of being a plus-size woman.
What sets me apart from others, and something I’m most proud of in my career is my sense of style and my determination to not look or dress like anyone or even put out content like anyone else. I dare to be different and dare to be on the outskirts of what people consider “normal.”
I’m aware that women and even men struggle with being confident within themselves and in the skin that they’re in, and if I can help a few people come out of their shells and live a more fulfilling life then I’m glad to be a part of that.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned on this journey is to ignore every single person that is trying to tear you down. Ignore everyone that thinks they know you better than you know yourself.
It’s easy to get caught up in others’ opinions of you or other people’s beliefs about what they think you should do or how you should act, but in reality, you know you better than anyone. You’re the person that’s been with you for the longest, and no one should have the power to sway your mind so easily.
Being a content creator comes with a lot of different opinions at such a ferocious speed because it’s so many people giving their opinions on you. It’s not based on the work that you do or the performance that you’ve exhibited, it’s you, and you’re personal life. So learning how to ignore that and keep going anyway is the biggest thing I’ve learned and continuously try to master day by day.
