Daily Inspiration: Meet Kimmy Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimmy Johnson

Hi Kimmy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Breaking into the fashion industry was harder than I ever imagined, even with my fashion degree. The frustration eventually led me to give up on my search and switch to a completely different industry. After several years, I had an epiphany—fashion had always been my true passion. So, I decided to create my own opportunity by launching Honey Pop Vintage. I started doing local markets around Los Angeles, curating my thrift finds. I want to confidently occupy space and represent myself as a queer person of color. The more markets I participated in, the more recognition I gained, and the more amazing people I met along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an uphill battle—many markets are held rain or shine, so dealing with rainy days was definitely a learning curve. Curating my inventory has also been a challenge, especially with limited funds and finding time to visit thrift stores while working a full-time job. On top of that, I strive to create content every day, which can be tough when I’m the only one working on it. Despite these struggles, I’ve pushed through because selling second-hand clothing brings me true joy, and my business is committed to supporting slow fashion.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work at a buy, sell, and trade second-hand store, where I spend my days off creating social media content and digital flyers. I’m particularly drawn to unique finds from the 90s to early 2010s. It’s so fulfilling to be able to fully unleash my creativity in promoting the shop. Whether is creating visuals for upcoming markets to showing off new inventory.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m fortunate to have made new friends through my business ventures. I’m doing what truly makes me happy, and I can envision a future where Honey Pop Vintage grows even further. The tips and advice I’ve received from these friends have been incredibly valuable in helping me shape and improve my business. Also having a great support system that consists of my family and my partner who always show up for me. One of the challenges I’ve faced is that resellers often receive a lot of hate due to others who overcharge. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to look great on a budget, especially when it comes to pre-loved clothing.
