Daily Inspiration: Meet Kenix Xiaoqing Liang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenix Xiaoqing Liang.

Hi Kenix Xiaoqing, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I came to the US to study art because I always thought I didn’t belong to the business and economic field that I used to major in. After my undergraduate study at UCLA, I continued to work on my art and two years later, I attended an MFA program in California Institute of the Arts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
First, it took some time for my parents to understand what I am doing and what my passion is, since I am the only one who is in the art field. I need to work my way up on my own and make them understand that I am aware of the career path I am taking and the challenges along the way. There are so many factors at play in the art world: accessibility to curators, galleries and shows, public exposures, choosing the right gallery to work with. Plus, there is never a smooth road in terms of making art. Struggle is an innate process in the art-making.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist mainly focusing on painting and small ceramic sculptures. My work focuses on looking beyond the surface of nature and exploring hidden narratives in nature as an attempt to search for alternative way of living or surviving in this ever-changing ecological crisis.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My way of networking is not new. Keep a good connection with teachers and peers from your previous schools. Reach out to people with sincerity, no matter it’s on the internet or in person. Go to art events. A good connection never happens when you force it, sometimes it just hit when the vibe is right!
